  • Aucky

Good morning fellow Oilers and a very Merry Christmas to all of you wherever you may be.

The kids all flew in yesterday and asleep in their old rooms although the house was a lot more peaceful at 5.00am this morning than in previous years! Mrs Aucky is very pleased to have her brood back under the one roof albeit for just a couple of days.

Bacon for breakfast this morning and plenty of it. AND black pudding!

    Have a wonderful day.

    • dgrogan

Have a wonderful day with your family Mr and Mrs Aucky. But definitely no black pudding for me thanks! Lambs fry would be welcome but…

      • Aucky

Lambs fry would be just fine DG. By the way what is a SWMBO?

        • dgrogan

:) She who must be obeyed.

          • Aucky

            Aah of course. Very good.

          • Cadwallader

You can test the obeyed but Aucky!!!

        • 1951

Merry Christmas Aucky. We do need a dictionary page with appendix for abberviations & thesaurus page for Whalerisms (mannerisms) ;)

  • Sally

Merry Christmas to all. Have a great day.

  • Nirvana10

Merry Christmas to one and all. Beautiful to see the ‘face of the day’. Thanks WO for starting Christmas Day by celebrating the Virgin and Christ child. Now off to Mass (getting too old for Midnight Mass). Best wishes to all WO readers.

  • Michelle

Merry Christmas to everyone Have a great day wherever you are

  • OAP

Good Morning Oilers & especially the staff, Cam & SB. Have a great day, rest up ready for 2015 & be FREED. Love all this Oil family I am in, it’s a super ride, long live The Cam team. Happy Christmas to all of this family.

  • Ilovelife

Thank you SB for the beautiful Face of the Day. The reason for the season! God bless you and your family. I hope 2015 is a dream year for you all.

    • The FOTD I portended was delayed. No matter how much we “hinted” at SB, she wouldn’t move today’s in favour of it. I hope it’ll run tomorrow now.
(in case anyone thinks we’re in control of this place…. ;)

      • dgrogan

Another SWMBO? Behind every successful man you’ll find one, in my experience.

        • I think SB posted a photo some time ago, and it resonated with me. The captain said (roughly)

“Don’t look for a princess to save. Look for a queen that will fight beside you”.

Cam and I both are married to Queens. We are very lucky men.

          • Wendy

            Love that Pete.

          • Wendy

One for the warrior queens among us.

          • mommadog

Brilliant. Coming from good Celtic ancestry (before my forebears reached NZ that is) I did a lot of reading on some historical figures but particularly Boudica https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boudica. She was a Queen that would fight beside you all the way. I see examples today of women like this but they don’t always stand out. Women who will fight for their beliefs and their families, but remain women and are proud of it. Women not trying to be men or crying about things being unequal between the sexes but actually demanding more than men. They just get on with the job. I don’t know your wife Pete and I only know SB from her posts but I agree they both are Queens.

          • One of the pleasing changes I have pushed for, and I think we have achieved, is turning Whaleoil from a blokish blog into one where women have a voice and feel safe to be themselves. I’ve wanted a female voice on staff, and Lux was the pioneer. I’m ecstatic how Spanish Bride is developing – she’s going places too. And I’ve noted a lot of female voices among the commenters this year, especially those that are happy to no longer feel the need to hide that they are a woman.

I’m not a #manban sort of a guy, but I do recognise that there is a female voice, a female experience, and a female strength that is completely different from men.

To have both of us on board makes for a much better blog, community and result.

          • Wendy

Im a bloke really. I know…I hide it badly.

      • Isherman

lol, yes, a wise man only ever engages in battles he’s absolutely sure he can win.

  • caochladh

    I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas……..

  • Watcher

Merry Christmas to my WO family.

    The French Experience

Jobs in France are getting harder to come by, with the unemployment rising again in November, for the third month in a row. Using the international measure of unemployment, devised by the International Labour Organisation and based on a regular survey, unemployment in France rose to 2,840,000 in the third quarter of the year, giving an unemployment rate of 9.9%.

Using the official figures of job seekers the jobless total rose by 27,400 in November to 3,488,300 – the highest level yet seen. This equates to an unemployment rate of 12.8%.

President Francois Hollande, elected in 2012, made the creation of more jobs a key feature of his election campaign.

The socialist government of Hollande is not doing a very good job. Expect more ructions here, but because the French people vote strongly socialist don’t expect any real change in the near future.

Plus les choses changent , plus elles restent les mêmes!

    • Aucky

I am guessing that unemployment is very high amongst immigrants in the big cities which will lead to civil unrest. I read a couple of days ago that Airbus is considering ceasing production of the A380 due to a complete lack of new orders which would be tragic not only for Toulouse but for the credibility of Airbus and the French aviation industry.

      • Honcho

It would give them a chance to implement changes on the production line that they haven’t been able to incorporate since production started, like the front spar cleats which come pre-installed, the aircraft gets finished, then rolled into another hanger to get the leading edges and tanks pulled to bits to have its cleats changed to the new mod state (all metal).

The A380 might not be being ordered, but the latest generation of A320 is being ordered in increasing numbers … aviation is like this, ebbs and flows.

        • Aucky

But Airbus have had zero new A380 orders this year and are now getting cancellations from US carriers. That definitely was not the plan.

    • conwaycaptain

Les Crapauds and the Scots both have a long history of voting in Socialist Govts. Wait until the SNP takes up most of the Westminster Seats in Scotland and then goes into coalition with Red Ed. The UK will TANK.

      • Monty Bank

At first glance I thought you were talking about the States of Jersey, Capt. Crapaud, is socialism strong in the parishes?

        • conwaycaptain

          Monty
Jersey has sold themselves to the MIGHTY DOLLAR/POUND and how the ordinary people live is beyond me. Property prices are at least 150% higher than the UK mainland and the cost of food etc is at least 130% higher.
The place is run by and for the lawyers and accountants and a cabal of wealthy families who have their fingers in all the pies.

  • Hughesy

    Merry Christmas y’all.

  • conwaycaptain

he hell can stuff say that Hager has done more than anyone to improve NZ during the year.
He uses stolen emails and tells only half the story

    • Chris EM

They’re still trying to sway the country before the truth comes out.
Mind you, Hager did ensure we got a National government, and has increased Whale Oil awareness and reader numbers. Maybe that’s what they mean. :-)

    • Imagine what he could have done to improve NZ if he released the other half?

      • kiwibattler

One can only hope that 2015 is the year of the Hager downfall………

    • Iva b ginn

I note that who wrote the comments didn’t have the balls to put their name to the article.

      • Nechtan

Nor open it to comments, as I’m sure most would less than favourable (like the pimping the poor story WO blew out of the water)

      • Isherman

You can however often pick up clues to the author in the style of writing, some more easily than others, I’m not going to make a suggestion here without being able to confirm it, but with analysis, some can give themselves away..just sayin.

        • Iva b ginn

I very rarely visit the site so don’t pay any attention to who writes the garbage there.

    • kiwibattler

STUFF have pinned their tales to the lefty donkey in that article – a random personal attack on Mike Hosking & Paul Henry at the bottom of it too: “Both of these shock jocks started the year in relative obscurity and the country might have been better off if they stayed there”……….”both leapt back into the limelight to spout their biased beliefs” – didn’t know common sense was being biased? and Hager doesn’t have ‘biased beliefs’?

    • Bluemanning

The propaganda of part truth, hyperbole, and omissions utilized by the NZ MSM left promoters; if they say it often enough to the biased and the ignorant, keep it simple for them they think they will succeed.however their circulation figures and credibility are shrinking.
“The most pathetic person in the world is some one who has sight but no vision.”

      ― Helen Keller

    • Herbert Charles

Sheesh nothing about National winning the election in a huge landslide by the voting population of NZ, just another angry lefty grinch that hates losing.

    • dgrogan

In a way they’re right. But not in the way they intended, obviously. ‘Unintended consequences’, I think is the appropriate law – when you think about what part ‘Dirty Politics’ played in the eventual election outcome.

The thought of what the Government could have otherwise looked like is something of nightmare for me. For some reason, I keep seeing a highly disorganised rabble trying to row a ship’s boat into certain oblivion!

  • Imogen B

Good morning Whale Oilers. Merry Christmas to one and all.
Our Miss 6 wants to know why the toys in her Santa sack say Made in China on them, when we all know they were made at the North Pole by Santa and the Elves.
It’s a day for mental gymnastics!

    • Tell her it’s to keep Santa’s toy factory location secret. See if that does it. If not, report back, and I’ll have another go.

      • Cadwallader

DON’T tell her they wer made by Chinese migrant workers in Len’s secret den! Happy days to all for Christmas, New Yesr and glorious summer.

      • Imogen B

We went with the ‘parts sourced’ line, but thanks I’ll keep your gem up my sleeve! Merry Christmas

  • Nechtan

Merry Xmas everyone, and a special seasons greetings to all the police, emergency services personnel, hospital staff etc who are on duty today, plus all the servicemen (and women) deployed overseas.

    • Cowgirl

      Amen to that brother.

  • Dumrse

Ho ho ho, nothing like a new Talormade Driver xmas pressie to add to the bag.

    Edit: Merry Xmas Whalers.

  • Curly1952

    Merry Christmas to you all.
Thought I would have a couple days off from WO but couldn’t resist.
We are down country in the Rangitikei at my wifes sisters place waiting for the onslaught from the rest of the family. Should be a great day with about 20 of us plus the odd “call in” from some good mates that we don’t get to see often enough – That is what Xmas is all about. Probably involve a few two many of the finest ale & wine though.
Phone call at 7 this morning from the grandkids to advise that they were up at 5 .
Luckily for us they have been banned from where we are until 9 o’clock!!
Have a good one all of you

  • George

To Cam, Spanish Bride and all your staff, have a great day and thanks for the intelligent, humorous and informative posts over the last twelve months. To fellow Oilers, thanks for your wonderful, thought provoking posts. To all of you have a wonderful day with your love ones.

    • kehua

      Amene.

  • Jimmie

Merry Christmas all. Yum just finished covering our hangi. Is a lot of fun putting them down and judging when its already to eat…

    • How early did you start the fire?

      • Jimmie

Lit it up at around 7:00 Pete. Used some Lusitania which I have had drying for 2 years so burnt really fast. And our hangi rocks were some volcanic ones we retrieved a few years ago by exercising my cultural rights (100% Pakeha) from the Tongariro river.

        • kehua

Watch out they do not blow apart.

  • Sally

Forgot to buy a present for someone, do not despair. It is never too late to buy an Amazon gift voucher.

I know doesn’t help the economy but will get you out of a sticky spot.

    • mommadog

I love Amazon gift vouchers but have only ever received one. I own a kindle that I use at times but still love real books printed on paper with a cover.

  • Iva b ginn

Just heard that there is another siege in oz down in Southport on the GC, any one know more about it??

  • terrynaki

Hi all,sea great heading out soon for a dive ,hope you all have a great day, very proud of my wife and family ,go the naki.

  • ProudChiwiSince1990

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/64448137/5-people-who-made-nz-a-better-place–and-7-who-didnt Rat face is listed as the number 1 person who made NZ a better place… and they wonder why people don’t take MSM seriously…

    • ProudChiwiSince1990

      Oh and Merry what-ever-doesn’t-offend-you y’all. :D

      • Wendy

I think I shall call it How Lucky Are We Day.

        • 1951

We have been ‘lucky’ all week to have endless Christmas music from Radio Stations without the usual “oh do we really have to?.” gripe from the hosts. Maybe there is some good from having massacres&sieges happening in the name of peace.
          Edit:spelling

    • mommadog

I just got rid of stuff suddenly sending me email headlines and now will get rid of it as my homepage as I am starting my new year clean out and don’t need the contamination. Merry what-ever-doesn’t-offend you to you too. :)

    • kiwibattler

Already mentioned below – I note nobody has put their name to the article? Be interesting who wrote the point slamming Hosking & Paul Henry – lefty propaganda piece if ever there was one.

      • Champagneshane

There was in fact a name attached to it on the Stuff website…a wee Irish lass with twinkling eyes who gave Peter Dunn a rush of tetosterone and who, given a pair of fangs, could easily pass as best supporting actress in True Blood

        • Iva b ginn

I commented to my wife that it could be the blackwidowette of the media!!

        • Cowgirl

No surprises there then – she’s not even trying anymore.

    • Now THAT spoiled my morning. I can see why there was no name attached to it. It just was the final nail in the Stuff coffin. I’ll not visit their site again (stopped buying The Press some months ago). The piece is pathetic but underscores the bias of the MSM – Fairfax in particular. Go Cam, can’t wait to be FREED.

  • 1951

Merry Christmas all. Email came in overnight from our youngest on ski tour in Hokkaido, saying that having skied their office-legs out over powder all day, he & his special girl were about to hop into a steam bath with a whole lot of naked Japanese. Now that’s a different way to spend Christmas.

  • Wendy

How cool is it to give concert tickets to your teenage son and he gives you a cd for the same band and you are both totally stoked?

    Im such a lucky mum.

    • dgrogan

      And the band?

      • Wendy

        Foo Fighters

  • Eiselmann

Thank you Facebook…….here I am on my own in a new town and I can share a little of the day with all my friends wherever they are in the world.

  • Isherman

However you spend the day, find a reason to smile and enjoy it. If you cant find a reason..make one. Merry Xmas and take it easy out there.

  • Steve (North Shore)

Righto you lot, promise that you will not eat and drink too much.
    Yeah right.
    Merry Christmas Day to you

  • mommadog

Looking at WO and catching up with the messages this morning over a cup of coffee then I looked at the clock and see its almost 9.30. I’m supposed to be somewhere by 10.30 and I’m still here in my dressing gown so need to get a move on. WO has caught me out again. Have a good day everyone. See you tonight in the Backchat and looking forward to reading how the day has gone.

  • Tell you one thing you can’t do on an iPad – the full page Christmas crossword! :D

  • kehua

Merry Xmas to all, peace, family and love. We are so blessed.

  • Steve (North Shore)

Gee the grandkids are extra noisy this morning, but I can take it I guess. They live with me anyway so I am used to it. Wish I had their energy

  • timemagazine

Merry Christmas to all WO admireres and haters! Stay happy, healthy and strong!

  • Skydog

A few quiet minutes so I thought I’d have a look at the ‘unwanted Christmas gifts’ on Trademe. The page says its unavailable and I’ve been trying for a while.

Maybe a sign that grandma has left, and it’s time to get so money so we can purchase what we really wanted.

  • Cowgirl

Happy Christmas everyone from the Great (not so) White North. We have spent the day roaming around snowy Banff and Canmore getting in the Christmas spirit. It’s not hard in those places. Canmore has Christmas decorations everywhere and even the pedestrian crossing signals say “Ho, ho, ho” when you cross (no, I’m not kidding), and Banff has the best Christmas shop nestled in the heart of the township. Have had a lovely brunch and walk around in the township and surrounding environs, and am now home in the warm, awaiting our turn tomorrow :)

    • I.M Bach

We’ll be coming through Banff in May.

  • I.M Bach

OK, who was this? Fess up.

  • Primrose

What is your opinion on this?:

Been posted here already, I suggested an Oilers Convention there next year.

I hadn’t seen it here before but then I’m a comparative newbie.

I got tequila I can share. Medicinal like.

Interesting reading the difference in reporting between ‘stuff’ and TVNZ. The below links I presume relate to the same offender. However, stuff claims the victim lives in London, Ontario (Canada) and TVNZ report the victim being British and from London. Mmm..not sure who’s right in this one.

  • ex-JAFA

I’ve just learned that several family members volunteered at the Auckland City Mission rort today. I hope they only served the handful of genuinely needy, and not the hordes of greedy, shameless, opportunistic parasites who’ve given ACM such a bad name recently.

    • Alright

ex-Jafa: my dad used to say you you can pick your friends but you can’t pick your family…..

      • ex-JAFA

Our family’s version of that was “you can pick your friends but you can’t pick your nose”.

        • Alright

If I’d had a choice I’d have picked a smaller one.

    • Wendy

They would be better off volunteering there any other day of the year.
Those truly in need don’t just need help on Christmas day.
