Deirdre Barlow is no more

Coronation Street.  Love it or hate it, it has been an institution for some time.  Today, the news isn’t good for Coro fans

Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride, who played the character Deirdre Barlow in the long-running television soap, has died aged 60 after a short illness.

ITV said the actress, who was in the show for 42 years, passed away peacefully in a Manchester hospital.

Her husband David Beckett and the programme’s cast and crew were said to be “heartbroken and deeply saddened”.

Coronation Street executive producer Kieran Roberts said: “We feel blessed and honoured to have known her.”

He added: “There are no words to describe the sense of grief we feel at Anne’s passing. We know only too acutely how much Anne meant to the millions of people who watched her create the legendary character of Deirdre Barlow.

“She will be greatly missed by the Coronation Street team who share happy memories of working with her. Our thoughts are with David and their family.”

Very sad news. 42 years playing the role of Deirdre Barlow has made her character a living personalty. RIP Anne.

RIP Anne. You will be remembered the same way as Ena, Minnie, Hilda, Stan, and all who have passed since the show started.

Sad to hear , haven’t watched Coronation Street in years (actively avoid it) but when I was a kid it was mandatory viewing when ever my dad was at home mainly because he was born in Warrington and it was the only programme where he could follow the accents:-) No doubt many people will be in mourning because of her passing.

I stopped watching when bogan legend Les Battersby left the show. Anne was and always will be a true legend of British TV. RIP
