Very poignant. Apparently taken by photographer Delgadina in 2008 – she wrote “Las Hermanas/The Sisters. They were coming from the market where they sat on a bench and ate strawberries. When they left, they started holding hands and only then I photographed them”.

      Thank you for the information

Welcome. It was posted here as “Source unknown” but is something of an iconic photograph which I have seen a number of times before. Delgadina posts on Flickr as Zet-Zet where she has a substantial and varied portfolio containing many extraordinary photos including others which would reflect your comment above about beauty being in the eye of the beholder.

A lot of old people walk like this, looking for dropped change.

A similar thing to what Obama did when he bowed to the Saudi King a few years ago.
Though some say He (Obama) suddenly saw a bucket of chicken on the floor ;)

Pretty much every old woman I saw in rural eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Belarus, etc.) walked stooped like this. Never saw it in the cities. I couldn’t help but wonder if it was a result of poor nutrition or medical care, particularly during the years of the Soviet Union.

A lot of old women in Japan are stooped like this also, not just in rural areas but in the cities as well.

Stooping like that when standing or walking removes most of the “pain”.
It might not look good, but hell, without the pain, at least they can still get around.

    • Popliteal

Osteoporosis almost certainly. Adequate calcium, sunlight and drugs if needed have made this a rare sight in the developed west.

  • Mac50

Inside every old person is a young person who wonders “what happened?”

Reminded me of a picture we had hanging on the office wall of Whina Cooper.

I so love this, its precious, such bonds.

It reminds me of when I drove through Clermont Ferrand (one of the best cities I past through), I was lost, I stopped to ask directions of three lovely senior mademoiselles sitting on a bench in the sunset.
Before I could get out of the car they waddled over to me and we spoke, on departure one bid me a safe journey and said “vous êtes très jolie manière en” I was soo touched because I do not get described in that way nor would I describe myself in that way.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess

Directions, blessings for a safe journey, and an old lady who saw your beauty. Sometimes in fleeting moments with strangers there is more Truth than we always immediately recognise. Quite a gift you got that day.

Correct Pak and its always been one of those memories to ponder and leaves me feeling nice and smiling
Like the photographer who took todays POTD, s/he knew it was the little things that can often be the holder of big meanings
