Mystery face of the day

Today’s mystery face of the day is Rachael from Hamilton.

She is my mystery face of the day because of her ad on Trademe for something crazy awesome that she built.

As I type this post bidding has reached $200. The auction finishes Sunday 8th Feb 9pm.

Disclaimer: I do not know the creator of Noah’s Ark and am not receiving any form of reimbursement in the form of cold hard cash in brown paper bags or chocolate treats. I just spotted it on Trademe and thought it deserved a wider audience.

You know how sometimes you see a pile of popsicle sticks and decide to build an ark out of them? Yeah, I knew I wasn’t the only one.

Crafted from the finest $2 shop iceblock and matchsticks, and incorporating about 20kg’s of hot glue-gun glue, this Ark was born of a simple question: I wonder if I can make an Noah’s Ark out of popsicle sticks?
As it turns out, I can. Kind of. This won’t actually keep anything remotely dry in the rain for forty days and forty nights – you may be able to use it as a flotation device though.

I didn’t have a pattern to work with, so each half is not exactly the same – This was done deliberately to give it more character, and not at all because when you’re gluing sticks together at 3am you sometimes aren’t in the most coherent state.

The construction took a month, and was fraught with danger. I endured many glue-gun burns, and my fingers hurt the entire time from constantly cutting sticks with scissors. Also, I once got a splinter. It was pretty traumatic, but somehow I managed to find the strength to forge on.

Only to finally finish, and say to myself: “Self, what do you think you’re going to do with this Ark now? There are small humans living here, and giant dogs who have no concept of personal space. This Ark will not last 10 freaking minutes in this house.”
Also it was more about the journey and all that jazz so it’s now surplus to requirements.

Board is 650mm x 645mm.
Both decks lift off so you can see inside them. Also, good place to hide your treasure.
Comes with 26 pairs of animals + Noah and wife. These are made from polymer clay. I couldn’t find yellow clay, so didn’t make lions. Every Noah’s ark has yellow lions. Except this one. That will probably haunt me forever.

I was going to set this as ‘pick up only’ ’cause I have no idea how it would travel, but then figured if you were willing to risk it, why not? Plus, if anything ever falls off, you can just fix it with a glue gun. Glue guns are like magical fairies sent from above to make our lives easier.

Just knowing this object exists has somehow made me feel more complete as a person. Thankyou rark. Rark? Is that really your Trademe name, or are you just trying to rark me up?

  • Cowgirl

OMG that is seriously awesome – want! She is very talented. I was almost afraid to scroll down, but that is very cool.

  • Ilovelife

Sure hope she gets more than $200 for it. It is fantastic.

  • Chris EM

That’s brilliant! From reading the description, I wasn’t expecting anything quite so cool.
Love the animals and Noah and wife.

  • 1951

Delightful. After the trauma of splinter in finger you came through, you made it to the end. Well done.

  • Murray Smith

More deserving of arts funding than Catton.

  • Kelvinmyhero

Send the link to Len and he’ll probably up the bidding to $1 million plus and install it down the waterfront.

  • LesleyNZ

This is amazing – some kids (and adults) would have such fun with this so cleverly built Noah’s Ark.

  • intelligentes candida diva

What talent and its nice ark, she has a good aesthetic eye

  • timemagazine

I’d love to have one in my backyard.

  • cows4me

You really shouldn’t SB, Noah’s Ark, you’ll have the atheists frothing. And so good that Racheal included cows, you must have cows. I built something very similar for my daughter to put her chooks in for the school gala, I think I might put that on trade me now.

  • oldmanNZ

Beautiful crafted, I was imagingining a bunch of popsicle sticks in a pile until i saw the pics.

  • la la land

I love this! I was expecting something really bad when I started reading – she has made a great job of her creation.

  • Tom

The bible never mentions kangaroos on the Ark, but there must have been. Penguins too

  • Intrigued

Wow! Love it. I am in awe. Rachael is a true artiste! I loved the description of her artistic journey and reflections on same too.

I hope the coverage on this site generates a lot of interest and results in a sale price deserving of all that hard work, vision and dedication she gave to this project. It is well deserved.
