Should we fund Team New Zealand, or would the money be better used in Vanuatu? #cyclonepam

The Volvo Ocean got postponed because of Cyclone Pam.

Vanuatu got devastated because of Cyclone Pam.

Team New Zealand wants $35 million to fund a yacht race for millionaires.

Does Team NZ really need that money or do the impoverished and homeless people of Vanuatu need it more.

I say we tell Team NZ that their state funded fun and games are over, we have more pressing need for the funds.

We don’t need a new flag, Northland doesn’t need new bridges and Team New Zealand can get stuffed.

Look at that, we just raised more than $100 million for Vanuatu with some sensible costs prioritisation.

The good thing is if you do all this you have stopped ongoing sucking from the public purse for useless things and when Vanuatu is repaired we can stop that too.

The people of Vanuatu are living in real poverty, and now their situation is even worse.

$35 million would go a long, long way to kick starting the recovery in Vanuatu.

What have we done so far?

Contributed a measly and pathetic $1 million.

The New Zealand government has announced an initial contribution of $1 million to assist Pacific nations hit by Cyclone Pam, Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says.

“Funding includes $200,000 to respond to specific requests for assistance in Vanuatu, Fiji, Tuvalu and Solomon Islands, and $400,000 for NGOs in Vanuatu and Solomon Islands to replenish relief supplies.

“Commencing from tomorrow we will make a further assessment on how we can best assist our Pacific neighbours, as they assess their own needs over the coming days.”

“A RNZAF P3 Orion already in the region is currently conducting a damage assessment flight over Tuvalu, which was first struck by the Cyclone.”

Clean water, malaria and dengue fever are pressing issues that are going to get worse, and now add on cholera and dysentery that will likely afflict them now because of contaminated drinking water.

I’ve been to Vanuatu on an aid project and I know how little infrastructure and government systems are in place.

We don’t really need to change our flag, or provide bridges in Northland and Team NZ should be told to piss off, we really need to help people in need.

I think this calls for a petition, so I’ve started one.

We don’t need to fund Team NZ, but Vanuatu needs lots of aid.
