39 million dollars for only 250 students but no complaints from the PPTA

In a move that would make the PPTA squeal like a Halal slaughtered pig if it was for Charter School students, the government has decided to spend an eye watering 39 Million dollars on rebuilding one block of a Wellington school, in order to benefit 250 school students. I do hope that the Under-Secretary for Education will be working hard to see that the funding between school types is equitable. The second round of Charter schools is already being offered a lot less funding than the first, yet here is an example of 39 Million dollars being thrown at Wellington East Girls’ College.

The government will spend $39 million rebuilding a Wellington school’s 91-year-old earthquake-prone main block.

WELLINGTON, Nov 19 – Wellington East Girls’ College’s main block was closed in 2011 because of fears for its safety during a quake. It met just 17 per cent of the building quake code.

On Thursday, it was announced the building’s facade would be retained but a completely new structure built behind it, which would contain 28 classrooms.

A separate two-storey building will be built for the school offices and three more classrooms.
The $39m rebuild will allow the school roll to increase from around 1000 to 1250.

“This is an exciting development,” said Education Minister Hekia Parata.

“Once the work is complete almost half the school’s teaching space will have been upgraded and transformed into flexible, open and light spaces that can be changed to meet learning and teaching needs.”

The college opened in 1924 and has a site of approximately 13.4ha in the suburb of Mt Victoria.
