ANOTHER $1m+ defamation suit filed against Colin and Helen Craig today

by Pete

That’s probably not what the Craigs were expecting, just two days before the Conservative Party AGM, but John Stringer has filed a defamation suit, joining Cam Slater and Jordan Williams in seeking redress for the highly unusual “Dirty Politics and Hidden Agendas” mass-mailed booklet.

Colin and Helen Craig, and others, have today (5 Nov) been filed with a defamation suit seeking more than $1 million in damages in lieu of the inability to retrieve their 29 July publication “Dirty Politics and Hidden Agendas” (2015) titled after Nicky Hager’s 2014 book of the same title, from all New Zealand homes.

John Stringer has filed a suit in the Auckland High Court (CIV.2015 404-2524) seeking damages.

His case was assessed by Wellington expert legal counsel in defamation.

Mr Stringer has repeatedly sought reconciliation or an apology from the Craigs for the booklet by text, email and letter, but was formally declined an apology on 18 October.

“We committed to give consideration to your request for an apology. We have now considered this carefully.

I understand that there are many detailed points that you have raised below. Doubtless we will get to these in the legal case. However in review of what we have published we do not consider ourselves to have defamed you. We therefore decline your invitation for an apology.” ~ Colin and Helen Craig.

I’m starting to wonder if I’m missing out on the gold rush.  I too have had a bit-part in that booklet, and something that isn’t true was published.

I don’t know John Stringer from way back.  We have never met.  In fact, we’re talking about perhaps meeting for the very first time after the AGM this Saturday.  And that would never have been considered if it wasn’t for Mr X lumping me into this farce.

The question is:  Was I defamed by the booklet saying Stringer and I go “way back”?   Or that Stringer should consider “who he is working with”?   I’m not sure I can claim $1m worth of damages for that.

Until the Conservative Party “inappropriate conduct” issue raised its head, my only interaction with Stringer was (can you guess?), yup – I’ve banned him multiple times from Whaleoil for over-zealously promoting the Conservative Party in the run-up to the election.   As people may have gathered, Stringer isn’t someone who leaves you wondering what he thinks, and he has been as much a pest to the Whaleoil moderators as he’s been to Mr Craig.

But it does leave you wondering who “Mr X” was, to get that so wrong?   And was it deliberate?  In that case, it would be malicious.

And while we’re at it, who is “Interviewer”?

I’m not the only one who wants to know.  As part of the defamation  action filed and served to the Craigs today (and others to follow), Stringer has filed the following questions for the Craigs (and others) to answer.

My only hope lies in the answers to those questions revealing some people who may have had sufficient malice to include me in that booklet when all I have done is do my job as a cat video poster.  I mean, my reputation as a nasty, evil, twisted click-bait merchant, drunk on power and tightly in control of ‘messaging’ here is seriously damaged by this.

Or so I hope.   I need to upgrade the car soon, and can do with some of Craig’s money.   Between Slater, Williams and Stringer, he’s already being pinged for close to $3.5m, so Colin won’t notice a lazy $50k from me in that lot, surely?

Clearly the AGM will not go the way the organisers are hoping it will go, with Conservative Party members who still believe in the party, but not Mr Craig, attending to ensure a fair process is adhered to so that no judicial review will be necessary.

But if you ask me, Colin Craig and court seem to be be drawn to each other like light into a black hole.
