Conservative Party AGM – Take 2

Some weeks ago, I attended the Conservative Party conference on the day they had the AGM.  My aim was to politely ask to sit at the back of the room and observe.  Failing that, I intended to mingle with the members during the cocktail hour before dinner.

The meeting was advertised to be at a certain hotel, spanning a number of days, and… I discovered nobody had turned up.  The hotel confirmed a booking wasn’t made, and I was shown all the conference rooms to make doubly sure they weren’t hiding from me, or anyone else.

So it’s with some delight I see the Conservative Party are trying to have another go at an AGM this Saturday.

With only days to go, there is no published agenda for the AGM.   Apart from trying to elect people to a board, everybody is so far booking plane tickets and accommodation for an event that may not last even an hour that has pretty much a single, yet not publicly communicated purpose.

The Party is in a rather unique position in that it self-destructed in a matter of days.  Some board members were suspended, like Larry Baldock and Colin Craig.   John Stringer has been told his membership has been revoked, so he can’t be on the board on that basis.  Questions who was left to revoke his membership, since everyone else at the time had either resigned or was suspended, are yet to have a satisfactory answer.

To add to the fun, Mr Baldock’s suspension (for talking to the media) lapsed, so since he is a board member, who hasn’t resigned, and who is still a member, logic would dictate that he’s on the board right now.

It gets messier when the people nominated for the board were not selected by anyone in the party that can be identified.  There is some woolly process where “the board”  (that doesn’t exist) selected the candidates to stand for the new board.

The fact the party is even in this position is a reflection of how dysfunctional it is right now.  The internal factions are trying to gain control before the others do, some by insisting the constitution is followed to the letter, others by saying the constitution doesn’t apply because of the extraordinary circumstances.

There have been rumours of an Interim Injunction being in the works to stop the AGM from happening altogether, rumours of Mr Craig working hard to stack the meeting with his personal supporters, rumours that the short notice, early start and  short duration is designed to disadvantage those from out-of-Auckland, and rumours that media (other than Whaleoil) as well as disaffected current and ex party members are planning to turn up.

One thing is for sure – judging by the more recent polls, the Party can only go up from here.

Whaleoil has an impeccable source that claims “Mr X” will be attending the AGM also.   Hope the assembled media get to ask a few questions of their own.
