Today’s face of the day is not sorry for being a man  for his comments about Labour backing rapists.

Prime Minister John Key says he does not need to apologise to female MPs who staged a protest in Parliament after he accused the Opposition of “backing the rapists”.

Key said he had had to deal with “comments and abuse hurled at me”, and claimed he was the only person standing up for victims of crime.

The Prime Minister caused uproar at Parliament on Tuesday when he said that the Labour Party was “backing the rapists”, as well as murderers and child molesters, among Kiwi detainees at the Christmas Island detention centre.

…One by one, a number of female opposition MPs rose to demand an apology from Key, with some publicly stating for the first time their experience as victims of sexual abuse.

…Key said he did not understand why he would need to apologise to MPs who had taken offence, saying his concern for the victims of the detainees meant he was a better advocate than them.

“What would they be asking me to apologise for? For saying that I’m on the side of victims?

…Key said Opposition MPs had “hurled” abuse at him rather than backing the victims of crime.

“The comments and the abuse that’s been hurled at me, not a single one of those has been about a victim or alternatively about New Zealanders.

“I’m actually the person standing up for victims of crime – I’m certainly the person that’s been standing up for New Zealanders to make sure that they are protected.”

Key said he would not correct statements he made in Parliament about rapists, murderers and child molesters being among detainees at Christmas Island – despite a breakdown from Australian officials showing there was nobody convicted of rape or murder at the detention centre.

“No, because the question I was asked was about broader detainees, of which a third of them have killed people, have raped people, have violently assaulted people.”
