Flatmate wanted: untidy, unemployed or non-professional male smoker with pet preferred

A fuss has been made about an ad for a flatmate because the person who advertised made it clear those he/she didn’t want to apply. The gnashing of teeth and wailing was epic because apparently it is discriminatory to do that.

I decided to go flat hunting in Auckland to see what Aucklanders look for in a flatmate these days.

Trademe seemed the obvious place to look and I found a HOT BED of shocking discrimination in every single listing I looked at.

This ad has discrimination against:

  • men
  • married women
  • smokers
  • people with pets.

This ad only wants QUALITY people, whatever that means, who cannot be on a benefit and if they are working they even want to control the flatmate’s type of work.

This ad again discriminates against single men, people with pets, smokers and  people who are not Indian.
