I knew it…vegetarianism gives you cancer

Wonder no more if vegetarians are sickly…they most probably are..with cancer.

Long term vegetarianism can lead to genetic mutations which raise the risk of heart disease and cancer, scientists have found.

Populations who have had a primarily vegetarian diet for generations were found to be far more likely to carry DNA which makes them susceptible to inflammation.

Scientists in the US believe that the mutation occured to make it easier for vegetarians to absorb essential fatty acids from plants.

But it has the knock-on effect of boosting the production of arachidonic acid, which is known to increase inflammatory disease and cancer. When coupled with a diet high in vegetable oils – such as sunflower oil – the mutated gene quickly turns fatty acids into dangerous arachidonic acid.

The finding may help explain previous research which found vegetarian populations are nearly 40 per cent more likely to suffer colorectal cancer than meat eaters, a finding that has puzzled doctors because eating red meat is known to raise the risk.

Researchers from Cornell University in the US compared hundreds of genomes from a primarily vegetarian population in Pune, India to traditional meat-eating people in Kansas and found there was a significant genetic difference.

“Those whose ancestry derives from vegetarians are more likely to carry genetics that more rapidly metabolise plant fatty acids,” said Tom Brenna, Professor of Human Nutrition at Cornell.

“In such individuals, vegetable oils will be converted to the more pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid, increasing the risk for chronic inflammation that is implicated in the development of heart disease, and exacerbates cancer.

“The mutation appeared in the human genome long ago, and has been passed down through the human family.”

To make the problem worse, the mutation also hinders the production of beneficial Omega 3 fatty acid which is protective against heart disease. Although it may not have mattered when the mutation first developed, since the industrial revolution there has been a major shift in diets away from Omega 3 – found in fish and nuts – to less healthy Omega 6 fats – found in vegetable oils.

“Changes in the dietary Omega 6 to Omega 3 balance may contribute to the increase in chronic disease seen in some developing countries,” added Dr Brenna.

There is a simple message in there for vegetarians…eat some freakin’ meat.

This finding makes me feel vindicated for continuing to eat bacon. Seriously tho some researcher or another has found that almost all food groups contain carcinogens that cause cancer. A staple diet of good red wine and bacon should see me living to three score year’s plus 10 and a bit.

I am vegetarian, seriously, except for bacon whenever and steak like that pictured.

Seriously. nearly 100% of what I eat is vegetarian except at a BBQ or if I go to a restaurant then steak is it.

Evolution is a curious thing, not least of which led to us standing upright and losing our tail. Who knows wnere it will all lead. I am changing tto gin gjven I think it is some sort of a preseevative i,e Queen Mother just short of 101, present Queen still going strong, my aunt 99 and mother 96 still in own homes, they all enjoy or enjoyed a gin or two. Given quinine in the tonic water (real tonic ) it staves off the pesky mosquitos or malaria as well, double bonus.

Spot on. When I was working in New Guinea we were given quinine tablets for malaria, but were warned that it was bad for our eye sight. Just what pilots need. Most of us stopped taking them. I drank tonic like you and put plenty of gin in it to make drinkable, still do, never got malaria.

This is one piece of research that I can agree with. My cousin’s wife, a life-long vegetarian really surprised our family considering the care she had taken over her diet, when she developed heart disease.
Then my son’s friend who is from a family of vegetarians, has never ingested meat, eats only organic registered foods, broke out in boils, deep angry welts of inflammation which took him weeks to over-come, such was the state of his immune system.
    Really interesting study.

    Simple: Meat = Medicine.

Dr: Oh are you a bit sickly today Mr Jones?

Jones: Yes Dr, I missed out on having any meat yesterday – I am feeling poorly.

Dr: Well Mr Jones I will write you out a prescription for 6 rashers of bacon and 2 fillet steaks – it should have you back in order in no time.

  • Oh Please

    Proof there is a God.

Vegans have lots of problems with their diets, imagine being a hungry male and eliminating meat from your diet, your just going to turn to the carbs which is what they all do. I think to be Vegan you have to be really skinny and then maybe its better off but a lot overeat and guess what happens when you overeat carbs? You can seriously imbalance your gut which leads to Candidasis which can only be stopped by not eating carbs and at that point your probably going to give up on being vegan or be a stupid martyr. They wont last long and it’ll finally be case closed, but can we survive the stupidity they wreak upon society before they succumb?
