And the Greens and other left-wing parties want this to all stop?

The planet is greening, literally, and you’ll never guess what is causing it.

Yep, that awful killer trace gas called carbon dioxide…the very same element the left-wing warmists tell us is killing us all.

But before we get started with the blame game…it is NASA who has released the data.

From a quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated lands has shown significant greening over the last 35 years largely due to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change on April 25.

An international team of 32 authors from 24 institutions in eight countries led the effort, which involved using satellite data from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer instruments to help determine the leaf area index, or amount of leaf cover, over the planet’s vegetated regions. The greening represents an increase in leaves on plants and trees equivalent in area to two times the continental United States.

Green leaves use energy from sunlight through photosynthesis to chemically combine carbon dioxide drawn in from the air with water and nutrients tapped from the ground to produce sugars, which are the main source of food, fiber and fuel for life on Earth. Studies have shown that increased concentrations of carbon dioxide increase photosynthesis, spurring plant growth.

However, carbon dioxide fertilization isn’t the only cause of increased plant growth–nitrogen, land cover change and climate change by way of global temperature, precipitation and sunlight changes all contribute to the greening effect. To determine the extent of carbon dioxide’s contribution, researchers ran the data for carbon dioxide and each of the other variables in isolation through several computer models that mimic the plant growth observed in the satellite data.

Results showed that carbon dioxide fertilization explains 70 percent of the greening effect, said co-author Ranga Myneni, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University. “The second most important driver is nitrogen, at 9 percent. So we see what an outsized role CO2 plays in this process.”

About 85 percent of Earth’s ice-free lands is covered by vegetation. The area covered by all the green leaves on Earth is equal to, on average, 32 percent of Earth’s total surface area – oceans, lands and permanent ice sheets combined. The extent of the greening over the past 35 years “has the ability to fundamentally change the cycling of water and carbon in the climate system,” said lead author Zaichun Zhu, a researcher from Peking University, China, who did the first half of this study with Myneni as a visiting scholar at Boston University.

Every year, about half of the 10 billion tons of carbon emitted into the atmosphere from human activities remains temporarily stored, in about equal parts, in the oceans and plants. “While our study did not address the connection between greening and carbon storage in plants, other studies have reported an increasing carbon sink on land since the 1980s, which is entirely consistent with the idea of a greening Earth,” said co-author Shilong Piao of the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University.

And the wombles want this to all end?

So how many millions have been removed from our pockets by corrupt politicians and the village idiot greens to stop this greening? It’s time for this crap to stop. I want a greener world why should I and millions of others be forced to hand over our diminishing wealth to communists and dipsticks.

    • Rick H

It’s not millions, nor is it even billions.
      It’s in the Trillions.
      Heads need to roll.

    • WeaselKiss

Listen mate, that’s enough of that sort of uppity talk.
Don’t you go getting too far above your station.
Just keep on washing udders and pulling tits.
Yeah. That’s what you gotta do.

      *or so they say….*

  • Metricman

Well blow me down, so that’s why its called an ecosystem. I think our greenie mates forgot the “system” part of the eco.

  • R&BAvenger

So, plant more trees, isn’t that the message that has been pushed by environmentalists over the past 40 plus years?

  • oldmanNZ

the so call green scientist that will make up theories to justify there own need…a global Tax on the rich.

the greens are no scientist yet they think they know all about CO2.

I have always maintain that the world will adapt, and became very aware this CO2 thing was staring to get ground.

If you put more food in front of a human, he will eat more, if you give plants more food, yes, they will consume more too. Thats why they pump CO2 into glasshouse, to make the plants grow faster and bigger.
Ever wonder why your supermarket veges are usually bigger and better looking than your home grown?

  • Lord Onerous I

‘To determine the extent of carbon dioxide’s contribution, researchers
ran the data for carbon dioxide and each of the other variables in
isolation through several computer models that mimic the plant growth
    observed in the satellite data.’

Would those be the same sorts of computer models that have so spectacularly failed to predict real world measurements in the past?

  • Rightsideofthebed

Just wait – NASA will be out with the green felt pen shortly recolouring the images to ‘take into account changes in colour’ over the time period. They’ll be back on ‘CO2 bad’ message in no time.

  • shykiwibloke

David Ballamy said this years ago and was ostracised for it. His evidence was – if CO2 is so bad – why do they pump it into greenhouses to make the plants grow better?

    • WeaselKiss

I like the video I saw once where a Japanese scientist – who after a lot of research – re-created the atmosphere that he said existed pre The Flood.
(You know, Noah and his wooden boat and all the animals).
The scientist reckoned the atmosphere had way more carbon dioxide than we do today.
In his glass house he grew a tomato plant that reached 30 feet high.

  • lyall

maybe this is gods way of fixing the planet, more greenery, less greenies!

  • Fuglybud

The UN’s climate efforts have nothing to do with the environment. They are intent on taking money from poor people in rich countries and giving it to the rich in poor countries. The greenies, media, scientific community (loose definition) and politicians have all found a little niche in the money tsunami to meet their own disparate goals, all of dubious environmental focus.

  • BR

No need to look so surprised. The carbon cycle is a self correcting servo system, much like the free market.

    Bill.

  • Tom

The next “Global Warming ” threat will be dinosaurs!

    • Terry

The dinosaurs are already here! These days they’re called Greens.

  • Boondecker

Every time there’s a large forest fire or a large volcanic eruption, it appears all over the news and often for years later in documentary-styled programmes on TV. The amounts of harmful chemicals released into the atmosphere by nature by something that has been gong on for six billion years never seems to get any credit by the green movement or the ‘global warming’ politicos. Why is that?

Too much of an inconvenient truth, might I suggest. It’s just easier to blame us humans for everything (and make money from it in some cases).

  • CheesyEarWax

Man-made greening, this will kill the planet. The only way to save it is to adopt socialism and communism like Venezuela.

  • Left Right Out

“Green leaves use energy from sunlight through photosynthesis to chemically combine carbon dioxide drawn in from the air with water and nutrients tapped from the ground to produce SUGARS, which are the main source of food, fiber and fuel for life on Earth. ”

Now I know why they are all on board with the sugar tax…. they are getting nowhere with sea level rises and climate change……. and now I read Trees use the CO2 to produce sugars……. I can see a new push for the Sugar Tax on it’s way!!!
