Face of the Day

After a distinguished career with MediaWorks spanning 23 years, Newshub at 6pm and Paul Henry Presenter Hilary Barry has decided to leave the company.

Mark Weldon, Group CEO, said: “On behalf of MediaWorks, I want to thank and pay tribute to Hilary. She is a brilliant broadcaster, highly respected journalist and much-loved personality, who will be missed by myself, colleagues and audiences.

“She started with TV3 as a news reporter in Christchurch in 1993 and has become one of New Zealand’s favourite personalities on television and radio.

“This was a personal decision made by Hilary. We are disappointed to lose her but also acknowledge that, after 23 years, it’s very reasonable she might wish to make a change. So, we respect her decision, thank her for her enormous contribution, and wish her the very best.

She’ll work out her notice, which is four weeks.

I suspect that we’ll discover the real reasons behind Hillary’s departure in due course. Word is that Mediaworks isn’t a happy place these days with even the most senior people on stress leave.

Working early morning and a 6pm just isn’t something that veterans in the industry can keep up, especially when your morning job involves being the woman punching-bag straight ‘man’ for Paul Henry’s observations about how her breasts distract him.

i have no feelings either way personally, but i get annoyed when every bulletin she reads about trump she reads in a condescending tone and rolls her eyes. some of us are adults hilary, and are quite capable of making up our minds on the topic thanks very much. i think we would all rather have “just the facts maam, just the facts”. au revoir.

  • waldopepper

i wonder if this “newshub” re branding might have been the final straw. “we are crossing live to newshub”. “so and so reporter from newshub says ….”. the name is pretentious and awful and frankly sounds like something out of the heady days of the 80’s, not a brand name for 2016. its just cringeworthy and saying it live on air constantly must be embarrassing for all concerned. still, i guess for the rest of us watching the left be embarrassed and squirm a little every time they say the word, its the gift that keeps on giving lol.

  • LabTested

I read it as New-shRub every time I see that. An appalling brand. Shrubs, shrubs shrubs?

I gave up 6pm TV news years ago & gave up listening to Paul Henry in the morning when they wanted to tell me what was trending on Twitter.

    • Cadwallader

In the 1970s a “shub” was a small bath-tub with a shower above it. The plumbing was fine which can’t be said of the NEW-shub!

    • waldopepper

yes, same here. the “trending on twitter’. dear oh dear oh dear. thats fine if your target audience is 12 year old girls, but i imagine they have better things to do with their time than listen to morning radio or watch tv. and like you, it turned me off the show. which is a shame because i like paul henry.

      • Nige.

I awaited the return if Paul Henry so full of anticipation and the move from night slot to morning seemed to last far longer than it needed to, and what emerged with the pairing of Barry was just a total let down compared to “the Paul Henry show”.

      • Cadwallader

Not to forget that leftie little dingbat who comes on about 6.20am with a report from the social media threads. She has little or zero regard for objectivity, for common sense and needless to say, JK. She is loud in her msm/gang mentality against Trump and essentially contributes nothing to the programme. Maybe she’ll be promoted to Barry’s slot as she seems ideally suited for it?

    • Edward M Blake

But Twitter is so important. You know that journalists have had major parts of their brains removed. The part’s that do logic, reason, concense and common sense. In other words these people are empty and have no ability to form their own opinions. I understand that some journalists are having the Twitter surgically implanted these days.

  • Cadwallader

i don’t watch TV news but listen to Paul Henry some mornings on Live. I find the now lamented Barry to be little more than a glib loudmouth, at least in that forum. Her “humour” frequently has as its target, JK and more recently Trump. Her role seems to be to provide the routine ill-considered blather which is intended to pass as informative comment these days. Her departure will have been consigned perfectly to history within months of her final days just as occurred with her loss of fellow-traveller Mr Campbell. (Remember him?)

  • Doc45

Much of the media is in a mess. Just glancing at the headlines this morning so much of it is inane tripe. There is little professionalism and where it is evident it is downgraded. What I cant figure out is to what extent the media are responding to their readership and reaching for the lowest common denominator, how much is driven by poor bottom lines, how much is the result of poor quality management and how much is me getting old and hankering for the good old days – whatever they were!!

Maybe its a bit of everything.

  • Nige.

By the time she works out her notice she will have left almost exactly a year after John Campbell.

I wonder if there’s any significance there.

    • Cadwallader

      No; only gratitude.

  • KGB

Mr KGB said Hillary was really fuming about something PH said about a week ago. ( he hasn’t worn his hearing aids since 2005 so missed the comment :) So I wonder if PH was a naughty boy again?
A shame, I quite liked the Hillary & Paul combo.

    • Intrigued

I’d put money on PH’s comment about being distracted by the sight of her breast when a button came undone on set that may have really got under her skin. When I saw it I thought – Uh oh, this one might come back and bite you in the bum Paul – and of course in true PH style he kept digging a bigger hole for himself to justify making the comment in the first place. He wasn’t being derogatory or unflattering to her – on the contrary – but the mere comment on it didn’t go down well.

  • Aucky

Who knows? Mediaworks are maybe progressively ‘encouraging’ their lefty seatwarmers to move on. Barry’s replacement will be an indication. If ever there was a point of difference to be exploited by a TV broadcaster it is the creation of an intelligent right of centre news programme.

  • Garry

She’s not the best news-reader in the world, mucking her lines up all the time but she’s got a great sense of humour and should of been given more imput into the Paul Henry show. I will miss her.

  • Joe Banana

No loss, she has to get over her hatred of JK to be watchable

  • JEL51

Oooh goodie, was that a hint of gossip in there?

  • Asian_driver

Dont panic, they still have Verity !!

  • pzkpfw

How long before Rachael Smalley cries about the loss of another female senior journo from the media landscape…?

  • Usaywot

All the news is useless. I used to enjoy National Radio – now the idiots call themselves RNZ and have employed that drop kick, Campbell and the other rabid lefty, Espiner. I think I’ll ignore all news from now on, with the exception of WO, of course, and just commune with nature. Less stress, more pleasure.
