Imagine a world without whiteness, he said

The history professor told his students to imagine a world without whiteness and to imagine a world without white privilege. He believed it would be a good world and one that can be achieved if we “dismantle and demolish the whole concept’. Dismantle and demolish, huh? That sounds pretty destructive.

During a lecture for Portland Community College’s “April Whiteness History Month,” a history professor told his students that a “good world” is a “world without whiteness.”

According to TheBlaze, Professor James Harrison gave a lecture titled “Image a World Without Whiteness” and used lyrics from John Lennon’s song “Imagine.”

“And my interpretation is that he is talking about, ‘Imagine everyone living together in peace,’ that would be, not necessarily a perfect world, but a good world,” Harrison said. “And how do we get to that good world is the question? A world without conflict. And to me, my interpretation of these words is it would be a world for the U.S. without whiteness, in terms of the power structure.”

…According to the college’s website, there are definite distinction between “white” and “whiteness.” Whereas “white” is defined as “a term describing people, refers to light skinned people of European descent,” the term “whiteness” is defined as “the construction of the white race, white culture, and the system of privileges and advantages afforded to white people in the U.S. [and across the globe] through government policies, media portrayal, decision-making power within our corporations, schools, judicial systems, etc.”

And Harrison chose to weigh in on his opinions regarding “whiteness,” “white supremacy,” and political and social constructs during his Monday lecture.

“So whiteness, white people, share a whole lot of things, even if they don’t interact, and one thing that they share is whiteness, or white privilege,” Harrison said during his lecture.

“Can there be a world without whiteness, a world in which white privilege doesn’t exist?” Harrison continued. “My answer is yes, we can, because it’s happened before, and it all revolves around individuals taking small steps to dismantle and demolish the whole concept,” Harrison added before claiming that recent estimates indicate that white people will no longer occupy the U.S. majority by 2040 or 2050.

I have a question professor: Once you have achieved your new world order and destroyed white privilege and culture won’t that create a new world order that will need to be equally demolished and dismantled? Surely with Whitey put down, the new thing will be black privilege? If you remove white culture you create a power vacuum that can only be filled by non-white cultures. Look at what happened in South Africa. Once white culture was given the boot it was replaced by black culture. This did not make a better or fairer world for South Africa. It did not bring an end to violence or conflict. It did not improve the economy of the country.

It is not race or skin colour that is the problem, it is individuals who use power unjustly. White culture brought us democracy and equal rights. White culture brought us societies that are more civilised than any other societies I know of. People from white cultures do not migrate to non-white cultures in large numbers yet the reverse is true. White culture is the West is better than other cultures although I know it is not considered PC to say this. In fact, if a person is white they are meant to feel guilty for their “white privilege”.

As someone who is not white (I am half Arab and have Arab features and olive skin) I appreciate white culture and have made it my culture. Out of all the cultures, it gives me the best shot at a good life. If you “dismantle” white culture you dismantle all the good things about it as well. The premise that white culture is automatically bad and non-white culture is automatically good is a false premise. In many ways we genuinely are a melting pot as white culture absorbs the ideas and traditions of many other cultures. In reality, it is a constantly changing and fluid culture because overall it is very accepting of others.

Simple answer for most of these apologists, they don’t need to imagine a world without whitey, they can get on an aero plane (white mans invention) and lose themselves in some third world hole and try to get a really good grasp on the level that the “white” culture has dragged humanity, kicking and screaming the whole way, to a point where sanctimonious tossers have the leisure to sit back and critique every event that gave them this opportunity.

(edit) Obviously, my white privilege made me say this.

Haiti has been black-run for 200 years. Without all that white oppression they should be one of the most prosperous countries in the world…

Ditto blacks in the US. They talk about being oppressed as descendants of slaves. Slavery is wrong – no question. Being oppressed, however…oppressed from what?! It’s not like the Dutch slavers came to Africa and found cities/technology/culture to rival Paris/Amsterdam/London. The soon-to-be-slaves were literally lifted out of the mud. To say they’ve been historically oppressed would indicate that they were held down/back from previous greatness….

      • Evan

Haiti is probably a bad example, the blacks who took over killed all the white people left after the local revolution(s) and in turn were then shunned by the rest of the developed world so had no chance to prove if they could create a decent society – permanently handicapped so to speak.
The slave trade in Africa was well developed before any “whiteness” got involved, more Black & Arab folk owned slaves than all the white slave owners put together (even today!).
The British fought wars in the Sudan etc to try and stop the slave trade by and for Muslim communities in the late 19th century
Does this also include the Romans (as “whiteness”) who built a failed economy on slaves?

Botswana is as close as you will get to a black run country success story. Even by ‘white’ western standards, it has always ticked along reasonably peaceably and has made steady progress after independence unlike all the others.

        • phronesis

Economically they have done well by retaining the english institutions without modification. Socially they have a bit of a problem with around a quarter of the population infected with HIV / AIDS.

The US was founded on the principles of Classic Liberalism that it borrowed from Europe. The thinking was that all men had God given rights that could not be taken away by royal decree or whatever. Thus the Bill of Rights was added to the US Constitution to specifically spell out these rights (freedom of speech, assembly, right to bear arms etc.). The root of ‘liberal’ being ‘liberty.’ Specifically the liberty of the individual.

In modern times liberalism is no longer about liberty, it is about ‘equality.’ In that it wants to make everyone equal, as opposed to giving everyone equal opportunity, it is in direct conflict the Classic Liberal principles. Modern liberalism and its ideology of redistribution is not for the benefit of individuals, but to homogenise the group. In practice everyone is worse off, but that does not matter, what matters is that they are equal. If you understand this, the actions of progressives like the professor described here will make more sense.

….and it has taken me a very long time to make sense of their lunacy. While I understand how it manifests, I cannot understand the bitterness of thinking Marx had the right idea….it is probably a psychosis.

    • Mike Webber

Quite correct. The new term for classic liberalism is libertarianism.

  • PersonOfColor:WHITE

White, Anglo-Saxon, Western, Judeo-Christian, anything that a MARXIST can oppose.

White culture is the world we thrive in, developed since the Middle Ages, to eschew white culture is to reject the world we all live and thrive in. Skin colour has nothing to do with it. A cad always brings race into an argument when they have no argument. This is the case here Prof Harrison, the very system that allows you to speak like this, hold ideas like this and be heard like this is white culture, Prof. What non white cultures call people like you vary, but one non white culture call people like you a “kafir” – non believer and we know hey their response is.

  • Keanne Lawrence

Boy that could be big problem for one on the biggest selling items here. Whitening soap and whitening products dominate the toiletries section of most stores. No kidding. It cracks me up every time I go there.
While I am content that the gloss has gone from my whiteness and if the freckles could join together it might even appear to be a tan. IMO it is only the bleeding heats that suffer from any feelings of white guilt simply because it they were any other colour they could sing louder about equality or whatever the fav buzz word is.
Interesting question about self determination which seems to be that the darker the tan the biggest the scams. The politicians certainly have a determination to have it all first and foremost.

  • Miguel

I could hug you SB! I was having this very debate earlier this week, but as a white, straight, Christian male, my voice doesn’t count you know.

“Whitey” rocks, to put it bluntly.

Gay? Asia/Africa will jail you, and the Middle East will kill you. A white country will likely let you get married.
A woman? Brutal glass ceilings in much of Asia, and a generally miserable life in Africa and the Middle east. A white country will let you sit in the same room as men, go to school, vote, drive, divorce, control your reproductive rights, investigate and prosecute rape, and so-on.
In trouble with the law? Better hope it’s a white police force that’s questioning you if you hope to have fair treatment and due legal process.
Want clean drinking water and safe food? White countries deliver, not so much the others.
Want to practice a minority religion or criticise the government? Asia, Africa, and the Middle East will see you jailed or killed. White countries will not only allow it, but will defend your right to do so.
And medical care, and education, and freedom from corruption, and a safe/working financial system, and so-on and so forth. For all that people love to hate on whitey, there’s a reason that millions upon millions of people across the globe will risk their very lives to get into a white country.
Strange, given how horribly racist and privileged we whites all are…

  • Usaywot

Every time you think you’ve heard every crack pot theory possible another one emerges. Are there more nutters in the world than there used to be or are we just more aware of them through the internet? Problem is so many nutters are up in front of students.

    • Brian Dingwall

Yup, by living in China or India for a while he could test his theory…not much evidence of white superiority there…..

  • sonovaMin

Eh? – gender equality, gender neutral, homosexuality, etc, etc = Whiteness, white privilege. Supported by the power structure.
Technology and medicines for the rest of the world created by whiteness, white privilege.
Crackpot professor can teach any nutty theory he/she wants to gullible students = whiteness, white privilege. Supported by the power structure.
    The professor is an idiot.

  • cows4me

And this dork is a professor, God save us. Whiteness isn’t this idiots problem it’s the guy in the mirror but I suspect he’s playing to the other braying idiots that have to blame someone else for their failures. ‘Whiteness” is a wiping boy for those in society that simply refuse to believe their own cultures or beliefs could be why they sit at the bottom of the heap. The sad thing is that if they continue with this crap the bottom of the heap is where they shall remain.

    • sonovaMin

I would go further and say I’m very happy with my whiteness and white privilege which was created by my ancestors through hard work and intelligence. Contrary to the self loathers It is not some thing that was stolen from others. Also I am happy to share it as long as it is not to the detriment of those of us who are already here.
Half of Africa, the middle east, and India are trying to get into Europe to claim their own piece of whiteness and white privilege.

      • phronesis

Unfortunately those arriving in Europe now are only there for the money. They have no intention of adopting white culture or privilege as they fanatically believe that their own culture is superior.

        • sonovaMin

Agreed. They want the high standard of living, the technology, the freedom – the whiteness in fact, but they don’t understand that you can’t replace an engine with a camel and expect the Rolls Royce to still drive.

  • lyall

Are they going to hold any other lectures for balance such as ‘a world without Blackness’ or ‘a world without Islam’ or would that be considered ‘raysist’

  • One_step_beyond

    I’m offended.
But I don’t know how to complain these days; not being with Instagram, Facebook et al
So I guess I’ll just move on.

  • Eiselmann

I’ve always wondered about white privledge…I seem to have missed out on it…are there forms to sign?, could someone at least tell me where I can join the queue to cash in on my ancestory

    • PersonOfColor:WHITE

Your privilege is to NOT be a ‘different colour’, oppressed, anti-capitalist loser like those who find microaggression in everything. Just enjoy the wonder.

  • sandalwood789

A world without whiteness. Sounds like genocide to me.

But hey – it doesn’t count as “offensive” because according to the cultural elite “only brown people can be offended”.

Watch Devoy spring into action if someone said “imagine a world without *brown-ness*”

  • Orca

Martin Luther King once famously said : “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character”. Now, his descendants are saying: “It’s totally unfair that we are judged by our character, that leads to too many of our people being in prison, we demand that we be given an exemption, we demand that you judge us by our skin colour”.

    • OneTrack

MLK and Mandela were wrong after all – race and colour does appear to be the most important thing. Who knew?

  • Superman

    Imagine a world without blackness.

  • Duchess of Pork

But every night on the news I see thousands of migrants behind a fence on the Greek-Macedonian border holding up signs demanding they be allowed to join said “Whiteness”. And tonight I learned that the calm spring seas have enabled a flotilla of ships to bring human cargo from Libya to the shores of Italian Whiteness although approx. 1600 had to be assisted by Italy’s White coast guard. Migrants surely wouldn’t be taking what news teams refer to as desperate measures unless they thought there was some benefit to it would they Professor Harrison?

  • Orca

The only reason a person is allowed to criticise “whiteness”, is because they grew up in a society of “whiteness”. Let’s contrast that, for argument’s sake, with a person brought up under Islam.

  • veridian

Hilarious. The professor gives his lecture in a white building, using white electricity, powering white electronic devices and people across the planet can read about it in real time on their white devices. In a world without whitey there would be superstition, disease, and horror. Everyone knows this but I guess the ‘other’ is just embarrassed by their lack of any useful contribution. Unfortunately for whitey “No good deed….”

    • OneTrack

And the professor continues to live and work in the hell-hole of “whiteness”, and hasn’t moved to experience the joys of Mali or South Africa.

  • Orca

Cue David Cunliffe: “I’m sorry, that my ancestors advanced beyond the stone-age, I’m sorry thet my people created civilisations, I’m sorry that we created peaceful societies…I’m just so damn sorry”.

  • WBC

SB, you make a very good point. I’d like to add though that there is a potentially better example of removing whiteness then South Africa. There is no need at all for him o his students to theorise how that world would look, that simply need to take a field trip to Zimbabwe. He should also invite Mugabe to come and speak to his students so they can appreciate how supremacy, and privilege work in that world.
