Imagine a world without whiteness, he said

The history professor told his students to imagine a world without whiteness and to imagine a world without white privilege. He believed it would be a good world and one that can be achieved if we “dismantle and demolish the whole concept’. Dismantle and demolish, huh? That sounds pretty destructive.

During a lecture for Portland Community College’s “April Whiteness History Month,” a history professor told his students that a “good world” is a “world without whiteness.”

According to TheBlaze, Professor James Harrison gave a lecture titled “Image a World Without Whiteness” and used lyrics from John Lennon’s song “Imagine.”

“And my interpretation is that he is talking about, ‘Imagine everyone living together in peace,’ that would be, not necessarily a perfect world, but a good world,” Harrison said. “And how do we get to that good world is the question? A world without conflict. And to me, my interpretation of these words is it would be a world for the U.S. without whiteness, in terms of the power structure.”

…According to the college’s website, there are definite distinction between “white” and “whiteness.” Whereas “white” is defined as “a term describing people, refers to light skinned people of European descent,” the term “whiteness” is defined as “the construction of the white race, white culture, and the system of privileges and advantages afforded to white people in the U.S. [and across the globe] through government policies, media portrayal, decision-making power within our corporations, schools, judicial systems, etc.”

And Harrison chose to weigh in on his opinions regarding “whiteness,” “white supremacy,” and political and social constructs during his Monday lecture.

“So whiteness, white people, share a whole lot of things, even if they don’t interact, and one thing that they share is whiteness, or white privilege,” Harrison said during his lecture.

“Can there be a world without whiteness, a world in which white privilege doesn’t exist?” Harrison continued. “My answer is yes, we can, because it’s happened before, and it all revolves around individuals taking small steps to dismantle and demolish the whole concept,” Harrison added before claiming that recent estimates indicate that white people will no longer occupy the U.S. majority by 2040 or 2050.

I have a question professor: Once you have achieved your new world order and destroyed white privilege and culture won’t that create a new world order that will need to be equally demolished and dismantled? Surely with Whitey put down, the new thing will be black privilege? If you remove white culture you create a power vacuum that can only be filled by non-white cultures. Look at what happened in South Africa. Once white culture was given the boot it was replaced by black culture. This did not make a better or fairer world for South Africa. It did not bring an end to violence or conflict. It did not improve the economy of the country.

It is not race or skin colour that is the problem, it is individuals who use power unjustly. White culture brought us democracy and equal rights. White culture brought us societies that are more civilised than any other societies I know of. People from white cultures do not migrate to non-white cultures in large numbers yet the reverse is true. White culture is the West is better than other cultures although I know it is not considered PC to say this. In fact, if a person is white they are meant to feel guilty for their “white privilege”.

As someone who is not white (I am half Arab and have Arab features and olive skin) I appreciate white culture and have made it my culture. Out of all the cultures, it gives me the best shot at a good life. If you “dismantle” white culture you dismantle all the good things about it as well. The premise that white culture is automatically bad and non-white culture is automatically good is a false premise. In many ways we genuinely are a melting pot as white culture absorbs the ideas and traditions of many other cultures. In reality, it is a constantly changing and fluid culture because overall it is very accepting of others.
