Political Charity loses government funding

Britain has a charity not dissimilar to New Zealand’s Kia Ora Gaza that is called the War on Want. This month it had state funding pulled because of its backing of anti Israel rallies. Charities should be about helping people with food, education, clothing and shelter. Both the War on Want and Kia ora Gaza are more about political activism than charity so they should not be in possession of state funds or recognised as a charity. Greenpeace is another example of a charity that is really a political organisation.

This comes after a previous application to register Greenpeace as a charity was dismissed because it was found to be too political and its protests could land the organisation on the wrong side of the law.

The government has ceased funding a British charity which sponsored events accused of promoting hatred and violence against Jews.

The Department for International Development (Dfid) said that it no longer supported War on Want, which helped pay for “Israeli Apartheid Week” in February this year.

The statement comes as the Telegraph obtained undercover recordings of events where anti-Semitism, demands for the destruction of Israel or naked support for terror were expressed by academics and others at meetings in some of Britain’s most prestigious universities.

One speaker, Max Blumenthal, the son of a close adviser to Bill and Hillary Clinton, praised a massacre by Hamas as sending an “incredible message” and said that taking up arms should be “normal” for Palestinians. He compared Israel to the terrorist group Isil, describing it as “the Jewish State of Israel and the Levant, Jsil”.

At another rally – sponsored by War on Want – a speaker said that British government policy was created by “Zionist and neo-con lobbies”.

A second speaker at the same event spoke of a “rumour” that Israelis were harvesting dead Palestinians’ organs.

Kia Ora Gaza is more about political activism and anti semitism than charity. Here are three examples to prove my point.

Palestinian-US author kicked off his NZ speaking tour addressing a packed auditorium at the Auckland Town Hall concert chamber with an inspiring call for action to build the international movement for Palestine – focusing on effective boycott and divestment campaigns.

Finally, I give you Kia Ora Gaza’s mission statement which reads as an Anti-Israel activist organisation with political aims  rather than a charity with humanitarian aims.

Political activism should never be funded by the government or be allowed to become a charity. Imagine the outrage if I formed a charity to educate about the ideology of Islam that involved promoting boycotts of companies in New Zealand that sold Halal products? Even if this charity provided financial and other help to victims of Islamic terrorism as part of its charter that would not negate its political and anti Islam bias.

At this event at the Auckland Town Hall, a facility owned, operated, and paid for by the Ratepayers of Auckland no less, was there a vocal protest group attempting to shout them down and hijack the event……mmmmm thought not

Oxfam and Greenpeace should be taken off of the list of charities here as they are more about political activism than being any form of charity.
