  • Nechtan

There is a “theory” that the Titanic was cursed because her hull number 390904 was a mirror image for NO POPE. Link to item 4?

    • Abjv

Cursed yes but not by the pope. The first was a decision during design to use thinner hull steel than the engineers had recommended to save weight. That decision caused by grandfather to resign from Harland & Woolf and move to Vickers yard at Barrow to work on ships with thicker hulls. The second was to have a helmsman on that fateful night who had been bought up on sail. To make a clipper turn to port you turn the wheel to starboard; steamers had the wheel rigged the other way around.
