IMHO, ‘Lola’ includes the mostest cleverestest lyric ever, “I’m glad I’m a man and so is Lola”.

  • Carl

    They would suit each other.(pic)

  • EveryWhichWayButLeft

Is it just me… or does Steinlager taste particularly good on a Saturday evening?

    • Steve (North Shore)

It’s just you. Stella Artois is tasting excellent

      • Michelle

        Nice and cold

    • Carl

      So does the speights.

      • willtin

I’m into my second brew bubbling, of my second brew period of my life; otherwise Speights has been the preferred blend of taste in a bottle in the intervening years.

        • Sailor Sam

Brewing Cooper’s real ale, but if I need to buy ready made it is usually Speights.

    • Nechtan

It is just you Steinlager never tastes good!

    • Greg M

Must be just you. The Asahi’s are going down well here.

      • Richard

Still putting flash labels over your Lion Red ones aye?

    • Mark

Limes are as low a price as they have been in at least 3yrs,CD put them up for the weekend from $5.49/$5.99 yes you read that right! They have been as high as $40/kilo. So I am having limes in an approved container,Corona.

      • johcar

        To prevent scurvy, of course

  • Nige.

Jude answered last nights question with:

    “I was too young”

In retrospect, what were you too young for when you did it?

    Keep it G rated, please.

    • EveryWhichWayButLeft

I have told my boys that they can ask me absolutely anything and I’ll give them an honest answer.

The only question I haven’t answered directly [so far] is “when did I lose my virginity”. My answer to them was “too young”.

      • willtin

I assume your boys are at least young adults to even contemplate asking that question?

    • Crowgirl

      Drinking

      • Jude

Ditto for me and smoking at 15 my biggest regret!

        • Dave

Never been a drinker, Mum and Dad had a good business in te alcohol industry, and at times the car could not fit in the garage it was so full of stock. yet i have only ever had a drink or two once every few weeks. Smoking, yes, i think i started at 14.75 and had given up by 15.

          • Left Right Out

Boy, I must have been some nerd…. no drink until I was probably well…. 19/20 and never ever smoked… ever

I may have had a half glass of beer in my late teens,,, but bugger all

      • willtin

It depends on how you drink as to whether or not water will kill you.

    • Steve (North Shore)

Riding a bike, swimming, climbing trees, bullrush, jungle jim, driving a tractor at 7. No fun these days

    • Cadwallader

Visiting here. I am still very impressionable.

    • Jude

Jeepers Nige ! I had to re read what I had written.?

    • Lux

I got engaged far too young, I was 17 the first time ..

    • Caprice

      Leave school.

      • STAG

Never to early to leave school, out at 17 could have done it at 16, best decision.

    • willtin

I was too young …to be the only (male) trainee nurse on midnight to morning duty, for a physically isolated Ward in a Mental Hospital, with about 30 very capable males of all ages and every history, under my watch. I was 17.

      • JEL51

Been there too. Nightshift, ward full of women with dementia, one on the not-likely-to-last-till-morning list. I carried out regular checks as required but still felt as though I should have been able to prevent her passing. Big weight to carry at such an age. There were 28 in our class on intake but only five graduated, most were older than us 17 yr old drop-outs.

        • willtin

I’m still wondering what the heck I encountered doing a once around of that Ward one night. I backed out of the ‘patient’s’ room and locked myself in the office.

          • JEL51

I had never before or since seen keys so god damned big but didn’t they give a sense of security. I found some of the patients so fascinating I will never forget them.

          • willtin

I can recall most of my experiences there in vivid detail. I still wonder where the worst of the patients ended up, once they closed the institutions down.

          • JEL51

Same. One which had many of us on a knife edge of worry for months as she was of similar age, was an anorexic that slashed her wrists time& time again. I heard years later that she was happily married with kids. It was so hard to believe.

    • Dave

Only two things, they have kept me poorer since. Car at 14, Girlfriend at 15, not sure which required more maintenance, but both kept me broke and were awesome fun.

      • Left Right Out

Which one did you tinker around with the most? LOL

        • Dave

No further comment, Nige said it G rated. (I take it G does not stand for Girl ?) However, as funds were limited, i did all work on the “car” things myself, learnt a lot, and ended up fixing all sorts of things, once you get a reputation, the things that need tinkering find you and keep you busy.

      • XCIA

You were most fortunate you never got tempted to buy a boat ;-)

    • Left Right Out

Having a real struggle with this one…. I was a late starter with most things… nothing comes to mind, but a very good question as it made me stop and think

    • Brent

Work! Never forget my Father giving me dive gear when I was ten and dropping me over the side to look for a stainless seeding bench that was lost in storm on the Mussel farm. Harvest’s mum would ring the school. (must have had shingles 3 times) and these were the days we Harvested from ropes by hand. Weekends I would rather be at School. 13 I got a ear ring after we ripped the work hack in 2 (Boat Sunk) But not allowed it at school 15th Birthday went to school and teacher had my leaving card ready for me.

    • Dan

Blind drunk and comatose at the sprightly age of 4. I discovered the liquor cabinet at a party.

    • Dumrse

In the Army (RFCS) at 16. Pints of Lion Red 20c. Still got a fatty liver. Way too young.

    • Getting married

    • Miss McGerkinshaw

Getting married at19. Know it’s not that young but mentally/emotionally think I was probably about 10!
That said don’t necessarily regret it but it would have saved a lot of heartache for both parties.

    • Disinfectant

I’ve never had to think about this before.

I’ve trawled the bottom if the barrell and haven’t come up with anything.

    • Goldie

      Realizing I wasn’t a thirty-something at the age of fifty-mumble… I should have waited a few years!

  • Dave

I think i can fix the issue with cold state houses, I recall one of these at my Grand parents place, and going to get Kerosene for her when younger, yes often in a glass bottle, cheap, reasonably efficient and warmed a room.

Perhaps we should suggest HNZ supply one to any tenants claiming its cold and damp. Problem solved.

10 years later, I can recall the lines at Ohakea for the air Force staffers lining up for Jet A1 from the slops tank, it had icinol and other additives but still burnt well.

    • Greg M

Yep we had a similar thing when we were kids, it was a “Malleys warma”, we just called it the smelly malleys. The old house was certainly toasty warm.

      • Greg M

Just to add dad used to comment that the toilet smelt like a Fokker had just landed, with much sniggering. :-)

        • hookerphil

Might be where “Meet The Parents” came from.

        • Dave

both burning aviation fuel. By the way, the smell of Kero around Bulls, Sanson and Marton on a winters night was incredible, the air force social club must have done a roaring trade. I can also recall when service stations still had pumps on the forecourt to dispense Kero, and working part time on Friday afternoons / evenings, and Saturdays to stand attend the Kero pump for clients lining up for Kero. Oh how times have changed. Pump was the same as this one (Avery Hardol 4201) but with Kero signs.

          • Greg M

That brings back some memories for sure. Our local europa had a kero pump next to the diesel pump out the back. Kero signs were black, super red and regular green if I remember.

    • KatB

We had a kerosene heater at home when we were kids. On the nights when it was REALLY cold, just to heat the bedrooms a bit and occasionally when the condensation was running off the windows down the wall onto the floor. But you could never expect people to live in those conditions these days.

      • Dave

Funny thing is, we (mostly) loved it then, and survived, and all were grateful when mum or dad said we could light it.

    • Left Right Out

It was my job to refill the bottle when it ran out…. man that pumped out some heat in Dunedin

    • sarahmw

Yes we had kerosene heater that my Mother would light in the kitchen. Lovely and warm when I would get up in the morning. I remember trying to reverse her car but put it in first and put a horrible dent in it. It got stored in the garage over Summer. My Dad laughed my Mother did not.

    • Wheninrome

We would also have to supply someone to fill it and to light it.

    • Goldie

I distinctly remember huddling around a beastie like that way back in the day!

  • Michelle

One hell of a storm up here tonight being blowing a gale all day and even had hail showers
The barometer is the lowest l have seen it in a long time, we are getting some much needed rain so happy about that but hope not too much damage

Friend dropped in some mushrooms this afternoon which went well with dinner but seems crazy to be having them so late in the season, it was a big bag full of nice fresh ones

Hope everyone is safe and warm, we have the fire roaring here

    • MaryLou

      Where are you, Michelle?

      • Michelle

        Dargaville
The power is flickering so must be lines touching somewhere so hope it holds out but the wind will be doing damage
Haven’t had a storm like this for ages
Looked at the world map and this storm is coming straight up from the freezer room

    • Left Right Out

Lit the fire for the first time today here in Christchurch…. am currently laying on the floor enjoying her heat… listening to the rain

    • JEL51

It’s not so bad on this side of the Tangihuas. Showering off&on all day. Probably stay like this ’til December now it has broken :(

      • Michelle

Late start to autumn/winter means longer at the other end when you are over winter and wanting some sun and warmth

    • Skydog

I know how you feel. I’m in north Canterbury. Today I went out and picked red tomatoes from an outdoor plant. Just crazy, but I’m not complaining.

      • Michelle

yes l was still picking tomatoes the day before
It was a hell of a good storm with power out for a while and only just got internet and phone back on

    • JEL51

Wo, now we are getting it. Bucketed down 20 mins ago and now the wind has picked up. Think I better fill the kettle in case we loose the power. Going out to the tank to bucket water out for a cuppa just doesn’t have much appeal in wet weather.

      • Lux

        Fill the bath ..

        • JEL51

We are always prepared for the worse but we need pump to get water to taps.Drinking bath water just doesn’t much appeal about it either ;).
I don’t like the sound of the wind, it could be ripping all the avoes off the trees.

          • Lux

            Look after yourselves..

  • willtin

Can any WÓilers lead me to a sensible deal on an Internet Radio? We have learned of a few Brand names but not sure what is best value for money. Any suggestions appreciated, except, look at Google.

    • gander

Sangean WFR-28. Order it in from Amazon.com. The model (28C) distributed in NZ has the useless in NZ ability to receive digital broadcasts and costs three times as much.

    • Sailor Sam

Apple TV is what we use on a “dumb” TV through its sound system, 1000’s of stations from all over the world.
And you get Netflix and You tube as well as other TV stations.
On our smart Tv we just downlod the radiostations we want via the Apps.

  • Lux

If you died, and had to come back as someone not related to you, who would you want to be?

    • hookerphil

First of all one would have to decide whether a sex change would be in order – we all know the other kind have it easy.

      • Lux

either sex all good .. that’s way we roll ..

        • Goldie

If you read your comment out of context… well…

    • Greg M

Having spent some time being Al Bundy I would quite like to come back as Ozzy Osbourne, or at least be just like him when I grow up.

    • Goldie

      Bill Gates ;)

    • I’ve never wanted to be someone else. Can’t think of anyone now either.

      • Miss McGerkinshaw

Not saying I think I’m great or am absolutely happy with who I am but can’t think of anyone else I’d want to be either.

      • Lux

I have sometimes thought it would be cool to be a man for a day or so ..

        • Miss McGerkinshaw

Just to see what it’s like but not permanently. Quite happy being a woman.

          • Lux

same here .. but I would love it ..

    • LovetoTeach

Jennifer Lawrence. I was watching her on Graham Norton last night and there were 4 times I was laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe. She’s hot and funny

      Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown.
A man who led a most unusual and interesting life.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Brown_(pilot)

      • Lux

He sounds like a really cool dude, some people just lead amazing lives.

      • Roland

        Good read thanks :-)

    • Eiselmann

Cristiano Ronaldo….wealthy, world famous and massively talented , living the dream ….living the dream I wanted for myself as a kid.

Would only change two things ….I’d have never left Manchester United….and he sets off a lot of peoples gaydar so I’d want to be a lot more blokey if I took over.

  • LabTested

Off to Uriah Heep tonight. It’s not a concert as such they are playing a motorbike gathering.

There is a local small Harley Club. Once a year they put on a weekend event at a local camp ground. This year they have UH plus top local bands. 2 day concert. $50 gets you in for the weekend with camping.

I’m not good a guessing numbers but I went along last night & well less than 5,000 people. Everyone knows that they can’t be making money out of it, but they do it every year. Our thinking is that it is just a money washing scheme.

But hey, thanks for the music

    • willtin

I’ve had High and Mighty sitting on my Rotel for the last 2 days, trying to configure my ancient models after moving.

  • MaryLou

I’ll have to watch the ads on TV a bit closer. Walked in to the room in time to see a background of a kindy setting, and some man asking “Why can’t all children have an equal opportunity?”. Missed the rest of it, but clearly I have missed something else as well, ’cause I thought they already did.

  • Lux

A lot of actors reach a point where they realise they’ve spent their lives just reading out words other people have written, so feel they have to jump on some sort of activism bandwagon to justify their lavish lifestyles, even if they don’t understand them.

    What say you?

    True or False?

    • MaryLou

True, combined with a false sense of importance and native intelligence, due to their success in reading said lines.

      Edit: Kinda like autocue readers!

    • Carl

True. Leonardo Dicaprio is one of the biggest hypocrites.

    • Usaywot

Actors and newsreaders. The list is extensive. Too many to name. I ignore them all.

    • Eiselmann

Ben Affleck , with every utterage he confirms that he’s a weapons grade muppet. His rant on the Daily Show about Muslims is spectacular in its smug stupidity and arrogance.

      • Lux

Same with George Clooney … let them in, let them in ..

as they shut off anyone within 50 miles of their 100 bedroom private mansion worth about a billion dollars .. and his shonky wife.

        • KatB

I guess he’d be a bit biased, his wife, Amal’s mother is Mulsim. Guess he’s got to get on the good side of the inlaws.

          • Lux

Same with Angelina giving a huge speil the other day .. Hey Ang, why not let them live in your mansion in France .. it could house hundreds of families ..

They are full of rubbish .. and all threatening to leave America if Trump becomes President. I feel sorry for Canada, most of these hypocrites are threatening to go and live there.

          • KatB

That would be America’s gain, I would suspect. I saw Jennifer Lawerence on Graham Norton last night, having a childish rant about Trump.

          • Lux

            Tantrums ..

          • KatB

More like somebody trying to be the cool chick saying what she’d say to his face if only she had the chance.

          • Miss McGerkinshaw

More than his lifes worth not to I imagine!

        • Crowgirl

George peeved me the other day with his “Trump will not be the President. That will never happen” prognostication. What is it with these types making these statements with such certainty or do they think we love them so much that we will just be influenced by them? Do they think their vote is worth more than anyone else’s?

Shut your piehole George, you are giving people more reason to vote Trump every time you open it.

      • Bluemanning

Google affleck on bill maher about islam. A real eye opener :-)

    • Duchess of Pork

Benedict Cumberbatch, longtime BFF of asylum seekers and illegal
migrants has turned his attention to the British Remain campaign, joining other
top actors in signing a letter urging voters to reject Brexit. However in a classic case of follow the money British newspapers have just exposed the hypocrisy of these actors who have all
benefited from the millions of dollars of EU taxpayer money backing these films.

      • Lux

There is a huge group in America as well salivating with Hillary.. let them leave ..

      • Miss McGerkinshaw

Rats, really like him as an actor but not sure I will be able to enjoy him as much any more.

  • XCIA

Has anyone tried or bought an airbow? “The Airbow fires at up to 450 feet per second (FPS), powered by 3000 pounds per square inch (psi) of compressed air. Unlike compound bows, arrows from the Pioneer stabilize quickly after firing, improving accuracy and expanding the kill range.”

    • Mark

I thought about it till I saw the price, but definitely interesting.

  • Curly1952

    Element of truth in this?

  • Anyone watching the Parker-Takam fight later tonight?

    • Lux

      No are you?

      • Trying to. Will see if I managed to get in behind the paywall … #theminternets

        • Lux

Give us a blow by blow commentary .. ;-))

          • Not on until 10:30pm at the earliest. Right now the channel is playing WWF smackdown… (eeek)

          • Lux

Ahh we used to love WWF .. those were the days ..

        • Nige.

          The mint er nets?

          • Have you tried rebooting it?

          • Nige.

gotta be better than watching the warriors Pete

    • Goldie

I would like to, but not prepared to pay a fortune to do so. If he wins this one though, it would put him in the big leagues.

    • Miss McGerkinshaw

I cover my eyes at most punch-ups/fights in the movies so I don’t think I’d be signing up to see people that actually mean business.

    • pisces8284

I coughed up $50 so Mr P could watch it, but I will be going to bed so I can get up at 4.30 and watch Crystal Palace win the FA Cup Final. C’mon Eagles!

  • Miss McGerkinshaw

Agree with being cat – in a good household is imperative though.

  • Disinfectant

Intetesting ACARS data from Egyptair A320.

Smoke detected in the Lavatory and shortly after in its Avionics.

Whilst flying on auto-pilot No 2 engine reports a Fuel Control Unit fault. This would make sense if the avionics are on fire or have shorted without tripping the circuit breakers.

This could account for both the turn and drop in altitude if control on power was lost.

Then it would appear that the auto-pilot has disengaged and a SEC 3 fault recorded. I’m trying to work out what “SEC” stands for, other than 3 seconds later.

    • Greg M

Hydraulic de pressurisation. Circuit SEC 3 controls spoilers and ailerons.

    • Wasapilot
      • Disinfectant

        Thanks.

Another factor to look at which might give a reason as to why this aircraft crashed.

I once had an avionics fire and it is probably the most feared event for a flightcrew.

    • bc4

Spolier elevator computer number 3. There are 3 SEC

  • Lux

I don’t like cat food .. so would have to opt out of that one ;-0

    • Miss McGerkinshaw

How do you know you don’t like it? :/

  • Wasapilot

Daughter home for dinner tonight. I cooked a roast, lamb leg, spuds, parsnip, pumpkin, and silver beat. Mint sauce (store variety), and made heaps of gravy. Cheese cake for dessert.

There is no lamb left, the bone is polished, she polished off all the gravy, and the cheese cake is history.

My god, I have not seen anyone, apart from teenage boys, eat like she did tonight. Just me and SWMBO left now, as daughter has left to go out with friends. Peace and gastronomic harmony has returned.

    • Lux

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh YUmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I would have done the same ..

I think it’s this thing called “binary ” that nerds think is really great because everything in the word is related to a system of zeros and ones.

I think. I two am to scared too ask.

        • Lux

yes .. I spoke too fast .. ohh well.. I only noticed the numbers/binary a while later ..

          Thanks Nige :-)

      • Goldie

Binary 10101 is ASCII “Negative Acknowledgement”

      • Lux

It shows what a ning-nong I am .. I thought I watched the fight and it was over .. lol

        • No… that was an undercard fight (I think that’s what it is called)

It’s still on the way “soon”.

          • Lux

Thanks for that .. I was wondering why no-one was commenting here..

          • Why not cook us up something while we’re waiting? I’ll call you when it starts.

          • Lux

ok .. what do you feel like eating?
I have everything at hand …

But have to admit I’m no good at homemade pasta, it’s one thing I cannot be bothered with..

          • Small meatballs with a peanut dipping sauce

          • Lux

Well actually .. well .. ok then .. sit down and relax .. it will not hurt a bit ..

  • Fight is on NOW on the link previously supplied.

    • He’s looking very relaxed.

    • Lux

This Is the Main Event now !!

    • Lux

Lots of cheers for the local ..

    • My mum hates fighting, and doesn’t like boxing, but she always got up whatever time needed to watch Mohammed Ali.

      • Lux

My father used to be boxer at university.. and always got his dukes up or whatever they are called ..when needed..

Edit to add: He got a Dux at every school so got free education, as from a family with no money.. and was picked on .. and was used to fighting.. but decided to take the boys on and won.

    • Lux

I lost the link for a while is it round five?

      • Skydog

While you lost the link, I think Parker lost his fitness.

    • Lux

It must be really hot in there.. Kevin Barry looks like he is about to burst .. it must be dangerous to have an arena so hot ..

    • Lux

      Who is winning?
And how many rounds to go?

      • Skydog

        start of last round now

        • Lux

          #diesky

          • Lux

I had no idea people were fighting ..

          • As the sport goes, and for New Zealand, that was a big one.

He gets a go at the top title now.

          • Lux

I agree.. It makes us headlines overseas ..

          • hookerphil

Not sure he is going to be quite good enough yet, has had a lot of relatively easy fights and not enough like tonight. Isee Takam was ranked 3 and Parker 4 so a great effort.

          • You might be right.

      • Lux

Thanks mister .. without you.. we would have missed an extraordinary fight..

    • patriot

      Great fight!

  • Twitter: Less than $8K til #justiceforBlessie hits $100,000. Her family = thrilled, humbled and overwhelmed.

    • hookerphil

Sounds terrible but there have been so many murders not sure what her details are.

      • Gaynor

Hopefully it sends a message to judges and the justice dept.

      • You don’t actually want to know.

    • Lux

You know it’s about time people stood up and said enough.

For, far too long, Judges have been giving nothing sentences to monsters who need to be locked away for years, and never to be let out.

In the last week .. there have been ..pathetic sentences for terrible crimes..

If the Judges are not in tune with the crime .. get off the bench.

      • Disinfectant

Last week Duncan Garner climbed into the debate and asked as to why Judges consider themselves above criticism.

        He really did rip.
