Wellington’s icon and the nation’s shame: Blanket Man (RIP)

brian_smaller observes

I am walking down Lampton Quay this morning.

There is Ranty Shouty Guy ranting and shouting.

A bit further on some mad woman is yelling at passersby – nothing coherent.

I couldn’t but help think that these people would be better off in an institution.

I am not talking the old 19th Century model based on Bedlam – I am thinking something that we should be able to come up with in the 21st Century that combines the care that these people need with respect for them as human beings.

There has to be a better way than leaving them to wander the streets all day fighting whatever demons torment them all in the gaze of a public that is, for the most part, frightened of them.

It was an uncaring society that locked all of them up.

But it is also an uncaring society that set all of them free.

We’re not talking about the lazy and the opportunists here.  But there are a number of people who are so incapable of looking after themselves, they need society to take care of them.
