Europe’s leaders deliberately miss the point

German officials are calling for tighter guns laws after the shooting in Munich that killed nine people and the gunman, a deranged 18-year-old who was obsessed with mass killings.

“We must continue to do all we can to limit and strictly control access to deadly weapons,” German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, leader of the centre-left Social Democrats, told Funke Mediengruppe, which owns a series of German newspapers.

Gabriel said German authorities were investigating how the German-Iranian dual national had gained access to a weapon despite signs that he had significant psychological issues.

“Gun control is an important issue,” Gabriel told the newspaper chain.

The youth opened fire near a busy shopping mall on Friday evening, killing nine and wounding 27 more, before turning the gun on himself as police approached.
The Munich shooting was the third act of violence against civilians in Western Europe – and the second in southern Germany – in eight days.

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats, told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper in a separate interview that he planned to review German gun laws after the attack, and seek improvements where needed.

De Maiziere said German gun laws were already very strict, which he considered appropriate, and it was critical to understand how the shooter gained access to the pistol used.

Let us imagine Germany’s already suffocating gun laws were even more effective and the guy wasn’t able to get one.   Following the lead from other similar incidents, he could have used

  • a knife
  • a machete
  • a hatchet
  • an axe
  • a sword
  • a car
  • a truck
  • a pipe bomb
  • a pressure cooker bomb
  • a car bomb
  • a truck bomb
  • a cross bow
  • a sports bow
  • acid

If someone wants to take the lives of others, then there is nothing you can do to stop it.  The solution doesn’t lie in banning everything, it lies in changing the conditions where people decide that a murder-suicide is the way to leave this planet.

One way to do that would be to not mix people that have cultures and expectations of each other than can never integrate.

Making gun laws even more restrictive won’t stop a single attack of this particular kind.
