Dallas shooting: 5 police officers killed by snipers during protest

The dead gunman in the Dallas ambush was Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, of Mesquite, Texas, law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told CNN.

Johnson had no criminal record or known terror ties, a law enforcement official said.

A neighbor said there are police cars outside Johnson’s home. The neighbor, Wayne Bynoe, told CNN that Johnson lived with his mother and “keeps to himself.”

Johnson had served in the U.S. Army Reserve, two U.S. officials said.

Alleged Dallas shooter a ‘fun-loving guy,’ friend says

A friend of the man who law enfrocement sources say was the Dallas shooter described him as a “fun-loving guy who liked to have a good time.”

The friend, speaking to CNN anonymously, said he had not seen Micah Johnson for a year, but he described their relationship as close and said that he had never heard Johnson threaten to kill anyone.

Johnson would tell stories about the military and did not seem to suffer from depression, the friend said. The two attended John Horn High School in Mesquite, Texas, together, he said.

A slightly different portrait was painted by Johnson’s neighbors Wayne and Eva Bynoe. They say that after Johnson came back from his military tour in Afghanistan, he appeared to be more withdrawn.

Johnson lived with his mother in the neighborhood, they said.
