Claims of dirty politics and personal attacks over an R18 comedy show are driving a wedge between already divided community representatives.

The controversy erupted at a meeting of the Manurewa Local Board in south Auckland during a discussion about nominations to a community events trust.

Board member Danella McCormick nominated colleague Daryl Wrightson for the position.

But when discussions on the motion opened, fellow board member Ken Penney spoke against Wrightson’s nomination based on the latter’s involvement with the R18 theatre production The Loose Dick Kiddies’ Show.

Wrightson, an actor and comedian, helped to write, direct and produce and also starred in the show, which ran at Auckland’s Q Theatre earlier this year.

It features the characters Loose and Dick, as well as Brown Beaver, Lilly the Lesbian, and Hump-Me Dump-Me.

Promotional materials state the show contains explicit language and minor nudity and it “pays tribute” to children’s TV programmes such as Play School.

Its songs have titles such as Fiddling all day long and The drug dealer is the heart of your community.

Penney says he has “major concerns” with Wrightson’s “conduct” and it is wrong for a publicly elected politician to be involved with such a production.

“I can’t support someone involved in that sort of thing being a leader in the community or part of the local board,” Penney says.

Ken, you’re a wowser.

If we are going to take your logic to its extremes, then Arnold Schwarzenegger couldn’t have become governor because he’s been killing people, waging war and was instrumental in a future where robots kill all of humanity.

Tem Morrison would not be suitable because he beat the crap out of women in Once Were Warriors.

Sam Neill played a rapist in TV series Peaky Blinders. That must rule him out for any and all public life also.

Ken, you’re being a dick.
