Tania Shailer

That lady on the left was convicted for 17 years for the manslaughter of little Moko.  She has no chance of parole for the first 9 of those.  Sadly, she’s back in the news.

The woman jailed for 17 years over the death of three-year-old Taupo boy Moko Rangitoheriri has lodged an appeal.

Tania Shailer, 26, filed papers with the Court of Appeal this week, the court confirmed.

It was not clear whether the appeal was against her conviction, sentence or both, a spokesman said.

Shailer and her boyfriend David Haerewa were last month jailed for 17 years after Moko died while in their care.

Haerewa has not applied for any appeal.

As I understand it, with discounts given for a guilty plea, Tania Shailer already received the maximum allowed under the rules available to the judge.  To have given her more would have been grounds for an appeal for sure.  So I don’t quite see her getting more.

At best, she’ll get the sentence confirmed. At worst, reduced.  Either way, it’s worth the risk for her, and her lawyer will be enjoying the job security without any pressure to deliver along the way.
