Face of the Day

Ten days ago, I visited a Taupo farmer who had found ten dead deer on his property and along his fenceline after the 1080 poison drop in the Hauhungaroa Ranges. This man has previously had cattle confirmed poisoned through diagnostic testing, and has had eight working dogs killed. This latest incident has made him angry and worried that there are other poisoned animals on his property that he has not found. He believes he shouldn’t have to put up with these kinds of biosecurity risks that are not of his making on his own land. – Kathy White

One of the realistic concerns about National’s “pest free” plan by 2050 is that it will carpet bomb New Zealand with 1080.  1080 doesn’t just kill possums.  It kills deer, pigs and yes, dogs.

To DOC, anything that isn’t endemic is considered a pest.  That’s why they don’t care when they flatten a whole forest block, including the birds.  Birds from neighbouring blocks will repopulate, as will “pests”.  It’s a very blunt tool.
