Introducing: the Barka

Following on from yesterday’s post, Dogs and Islam, a reader wrote in the following:

I’ve been following Whaleoil’s stories about Islam for the last few years, and to be honest, I really haven’t been paying much attention.

But the dog thing struck a note.

Thinking about it, how absurd.  Women and gays are treated poorly by Islam, and that’s just taken as read.  I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that the idea of losing my freedom to walk the dog is hurting me more than the idea some Muslim woman is subjugated inside a New Zealand home somewhere.

But the idea that I can’t walk my dog through the park because it is also used by my Muslim neighbours kind of crystallised the message that Whaleoil has been hammering for all this time.

That you can not integrate with Islam.

If I respect Islam, and in principle I have no problem to do so, then I will certainly not make their life “unclean” on purpose.  But to achieve that, I have to stop going to public places with my dog.

These two things can not be reconciled in a free society such as ours.  Tolerance would simply be a label put on the oppression of my freedoms to accommodate immigrants’ needs.

I was born here.  I am a free person.  Pet ownership is my right.  Parks and streets are public places we all paid for and we all share.

To allow people to come live here that have to compromise on their own religious beliefs to accommodate our habits of walking the dog is asking too much.  Why do it?

Yes, it isn’t a problem now.

But let’s try walking through a Muslim dominated street.   At that point, you’ll be told you are taking the proverbial and can you just please not do that.

Seems reasonable, maybe, until they also claim the parks and the beaches.   The solution is to segregate, not integrate.  You can not integrate a culture that loves dogs and wants to walk them in public places with a culture that finds them religiously unclean and wants you to keep them only caged on private property.

I wonder what would happen if Muslim neighbours would move in.

Please, this  must be stopped now.   Let’s not allow people to come live here who can not share public spaces with our pets.

I don’t want to ask them to compromise on their beliefs.  I don’t want to compromise on my freedoms.  We simply need to admit Islam and Western society can not co-exist without one or the other compromising more than is reasonable.
