Rogue truck driver accidentally kills 90 on a day like any other, or not

News outlets are reporting that an apparent terrorist attack in the south of France has left at least 60 Bastille Day revelers dead and over 100 wounded.

A large truck apparently rammed a crowd of people enjoying Bastille Day fireworks in Nice, France, prompting Mayor Christian Estrosi to tweet: “Dear people of Nice, the driver of a truck appears to have caused tens of deaths. Stay for the moment in your home. More info to come” (translation).

From The Washington Times:

The chief of the province’s police force described the events as “an attack” and, according to FranceTVInfo, “asked that Nice people remain cloistered.”

Multiple videos posted on BreakingNews.com showed people fleeing in panic, though the crash itself wasn’t shown.

There also were reports of gunshots, though fireworks are often set off on Bastille Day, making such early witness accounts questionable.

Islamist terror groups, sometimes using native-French Muslims, have targeted France repeatedly in recent years and the use of vehicles and car bombs are among their known tactics.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but according to the Twitter account of the terrorism-news portal TRACTerrorism.org, Islamic State affiliated Telegram accounts were posting images from Nice.

French news sources are now reporting that the driver did exchange gunfire with police, who shot and killed him.

From the UK’s Daily Express:

One eyewitnessed [sic] raised fears that the incident “had to be planned” and others said the driver of the truck had deliberately chased down and run over people attempting to flee the scene.

They said: “I’m in Nice and cannot describe the situation – scary awful. Dead bodies everywhere people killed in front of my eyes. Had to be planned.”

A group of students who were on the Promenade des Anglais at the time of the incident.

One of them, Anthony, said: “The fireworks ended, and we went back.

“At that time we saw the white truck. A 6 tonne truck. It was speeding at 60 km/h, 70km/h.

“I saw behind the wheel, the driver was deciding which way it was heading. The truck rolled on to the pavement.

“It happened two meters from us. I saw people lying on the ground, I saw a small child hit the earth.”

A reporter for the Nice Matin newspaper who was covering the celebrations added: “There are people in blood, probably full of wounded.”

Let’s just absorb this situation as it develops.   The first thought was that they’ll have to ban trucks now.  Because trucks kill.
