Don’t jump to conclusions.  This is probably just a loner.  Nothing to do with anything we must not mention in any case.  Maybe just a failure of brakes.

Two witnesses told Guardian Australia the police had blocked off Merrylands Road, and there was a strong burning smell from the area.

Rafi Younes, the chief executive of Merrylands Century 21 real estate agency, said: “All the roads are blocked so the police wouldn’t let anybody go close. We’ve been told to close the shops and leave the area.”

Younes and his colleague Leonardo De La Vega said they had been told a man drove into the police station.

They said they had been told by witnesses there was subsequently an explosion, but it was unclear what caused it.

“So they had riot police and ambulance outside the street,” De La Vega said.

“You could smell something was burning, you could smell it burning.”

The ABC reported a man had suffered burns in the incident. The police statement said no members of the public or police were hurt in the incident.

The Daily Mail summarises:

I suspect he wasn’t very good at lighting the BBQ either.

While he remains unidentified, what are the odds that this man:

  • is called Steve?
  • is an 8th generation Australian?
  • was on the way to delivering some gas bottles to the local RSA, when his brakes failed?
  • managed to swerve into the police station instead of hitting pedestrians?
  • was rescued by police, after the car caught fire, and they took him to hospital?

New South Wales Police sources have moved to clarify the investigation – which they were initially treating as an attempted terror attack.

Sources stated the incident was initially treated as an attempted terror attack after the station was threatened with explosives.

However, now believed the arrested man – in his 60s – had mental health issues and no links to terrorist organisations.

He is understood to have been known to police and set himself on fire at the scene.

Despite not believing the incident to be terror-related, police still believe it was a “very deliberate attack” specifically targeting Merrylands Police Station.

So, a good chance that it was Steve then.  Wouldn’t that be a nice change?
