Apparently it is the Minister’s fault scumbags steal from schools

Apparently, the gutless anonymous cowards at The Save ours Schools  FB page believe the way to prevent fraud schools is to pay admin staff better and insinuate it is the Minister’s fault people are stealing.

People who steal from schools and hospitals and children are the lowest of the low in my opinion. Over the last few years there have been many prosecutions against admin staff who have misappropriated funds from their school. Maybe paying admin staff better (hello Minister?) could prevent these cases.

That differs from important things like…facts.

An account manager who embezzled more than $400,000 from the school where she worked, splashed out on flash clothes and overseas trips.

Rhonda Merle Crabb, 64, spent almost 20 years at Lynfield College where she gained the trust of her fellow staff members.

But they had no idea that for the past seven years of her tenure she was pocketing vast sums of cash which she was supposed to be banking.

At Auckland District Court this morning Crabb pleaded guilty to a charge of theft.

She “got a buzz” from the stealing, she admitted, which helped ease her depression.

Court documents released to the Herald note Crabb spent the money on clothing, overseas jaunts and “other personal items”.

The scam was only discovered last year when an administrator at the school found $2354 missing from school accounts and referred the matter to the associate principal.

Crabb was questioned about the money a week later and scrambled to cover her tracks.

No ministerial involvement there, just a scumbag getting their jollies.

This from 2016:

In the past week, two cases of fraud at schools have been before the courts. Donald John Hancox was sentenced after stealing $375,000 from Upper Hutt College over seven years, and Tania McCartney admitted defrauding Hastings’ Parkvale School while working there as a secretary.

In January, Tessa Grant pleaded guilty to taking $800,000 from Waikato Diocesan School for Girls.

Tertiary institutions have also been targeted. Earlier this month, Rebekah Procter was sentenced for taking $481,000 from Victoria University.

When a school was defrauded, the Ministry of Education and New Zealand School Trustees Association (NZSTA) and schools could sit down and work out ways to avoid it happening again, Wellington’s Berhampore School principal Mark Potter said.

Recent coverage did not mean fraud was increasing at schools, rather that people tended to pay more attention when it was children who were the victims of theft, being stolen from, instead of a business.

Poor financial controls from the board and the principals seems to be the theme. No ministerial responsibility there either.

Then the latest scumbag:

Why? That’s the question Nanci-Lee Katene needs answered before she can forgive the woman who stole $100,000 off her tiny kura school.

Katene is principal of the 28-student Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Tamarongo  in Opunake, Taranaki. You may have heard of it. It’s where Nikau Hohaia systematically stole half the school’s operating budget over three years while working as an administrator there.

Hohaia’s spending with the stolen money included ipads and Christmas presents for her two children. The cost to the school is immediately obvious. In an age where being connected is taken for granted as simply being standard, there are no ipads, interactive whiteboards and other technology devices at the Opunake kura.

The sums involved are usually six-figure sums. Are Save our Schools seriously suggesting that these ratbags wouldn’t have bothered stealing if their salaries were six-figure sums as well?

It is a stupid claim, but one that you’d expect from unionised mouthpieces.

This has nothing to do with pay rates or the minister and everything to do with inappropriate financial controls. Perhaps these union flunkies might like to address that from their unionised staff members.
