Can the sexual abuse of a child change their sexuality?

It is not politically correct to discuss why people are gay because it is assumed that you are somehow saying that being gay is wrong or bad or abnormal. The vast majority of human beings are heterosexual so it is factual to say that being homosexual is a minority sexuality. Human beings are affected by their environment. Human beings are also affected by trauma. We should not be afraid to consider the possibility that the sexual abuse of a child can sometimes alter their sexuality. I am not saying that some people are not born homosexual, I am saying we should not be afraid to discuss the possibility that a child’s sexuality can be altered by sexual abuse.

…Two viral videos of famous men casually discussing being molested as teenagers this week is no aberration but rather a common experience for many engaged in a homosexual lifestyle.

…The issue exploded earlier in the week when former Breitbart tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos lost a book deal and was disinvited from delivering a keynote address at the Conservative Political Action Conference…

Just days later, interviews by “Star Trek” actor George Takei flooded the Internet. An outspoken gay activist, Takei revealed he had his first homosexual experience with an adult at a summer camp when he was just 13 years old.

Yiannopoulos and Takei are not alone.

“It is fairly common among men who identify as gay in their adulthood. I think this is one argument for homosexuality being a product of circumstances… said Americans for Truth about Homosexuality President Peter LaBarbera.

…He said the research backs that up. LaBarbera cites a 2016 study in The New Atlantis that concludes that “compared to heterosexuals, non-heterosexuals are about two to three times as likely to have experienced childhood sexual abuse.

…LaBarbera said molestation was also a factor in the orientation of gay activism icon Harvey Milk, a homosexual political figure from San Francisco… Milk was sexually assaulted as a boy in a New York City theatre after his mother sent him there alone.

“He went on to become a homosexual activist who also liked to date so-called younger men, even a teenager once,” LaBarbera said. “There was a 16- or 17-year-old boy with whom Milk had a sexual relationship when he was 33.”

LaBarbera said the premature sexualization of children can happen in many forms, including exposure to pornography at an early age.

“Something happens when you expose a child prematurely to sexuality or abuse and dysfunction,” he said. “There’s other factors, but this is clearly a major factor in male homosexuality and also among some lesbians.”

…“A fascinating study would just be famous homosexuals. Just take people like George Takei, who are well-known as homosexual and look at their backgrounds,” he said. “I think you would find an amazing amount of abuse, neglect, dysfunction in childhood, parent alienation.

“These things should be studied, but of course, in academia, they’re not because the rigid political correctness says you have to be pro-gay,” he said.

It’s not just academia. LaBarbera said the media also turn a blind eye…

“There’s a lot of examples of this. But for the media, it’s not a politically correct topic, because when you start raising questions like this, people say, ‘Well, maybe this is a contributing factor to homosexuality,” he said.

“That’s the problem with this debate. We focus on the gay rights-civil rights aspect… We don’t talk about these negative causes and factors.”

Not everyone agrees with LaBarbera’s views. Katy from the 2009 Pandora’s Project has this to say on the subject:

There is an assumption among some people that the reason people become homosexual or bisexual is because of trauma resulting from sexual abuse in childhood.

…Within the scientific and social science literature, there is a myriad of research claiming to have identified the direct cause for homosexuality…

…SO – why is it a problem to claim that CSA causes a person to become GLBT?
The numbers don’t add up!

The National Health and Social Life Survey (NHSLS) 1.51% of the population of the US identify as GLBT, whereas other studies put this figure as high as 8% (Fay et al, 1989). However, statistics for people abused in childhood are significantly higher that this, with reliable estimates given for child sexual abuse to be 16% for males and 27% for females in the USA (NRCCSA, 1994).

Therefore, if there is a causal link between childhood sexual abuse and identifying as GLBT later in life, then why aren’t the figures for the number of GLBT people in the population reflected by the abuse statistics? There are significantly more cases of sexual abuse than there are people that identify as GLBT (Macmillan, 1997), and furthermore, the vast majority of persons sexually abused as children are heterosexual (Keith, 1991).

I think the writer is missing the point here if you think that it is likely that all the children were heterosexual before the abuse and it was the abuse that changed them. Also, we are all affected differently by trauma so her assumption that every child who is abused must become gay for the theory to be correct doesn’t ring true for me.

In addition to this, virtually all statistics agree that females are more likely to be sexually abused in childhood than males are – and yet, and yet there are proportionally more men that identify as being gay than there are women who identify as lesbian (Hite, 1991; Janus, 1993, Jefferson, 2001).

Boys who are sexually abused are mainly abused by men and girls who are sexually abused are mainly abused by men also. In the girls’ case even though their abuser is a paedophile it is still male and female sex whereas with boys it is male and male sex. In other words with the girls, the paedophilia is heterosexual in nature whereas with the boy the pedophillia is homosexual in nature.

…As human beings, we are very complex, and it is far too simplistic to say with any certainty that A caused B to happen. To use an analogy, you can teach someone who is left-handed to write with their right hand, but they will forever remain naturally left-handed.

One neuroscientist wrote, “Any human behavior is going to the result of complex intermingling of genetics and environment. It would be astonishing is it were not true for homosexuality” (McFadden, 1998).

It makes sense to consider both genetics and the environment as a factor.

…Some people question whether it is the fact that they were abused by a man / woman that results in their being GLBT.

Female children are statistically more likely to be abused by a male. Lesbian survivors may question whether the reason they are a lesbian is because they fear men as a result of their abuse. This could make sense until you consider the gay male argument related to this.

Male children are also statistically more likely to be abused by a male. Some claim that a man may become gay because he has been abused by a man and therefore identifies sex with men.

In effect, this proposes that a female becomes a lesbian as she is so scared of men because she relates all men to her male abuser. BUT a male actually becomes gay, and hence seeks relationships with men, because he had a male abuser?

What do you think? I think the reason why some homosexual people do not want to consider the sexual abuse theory is because they are afraid that it will back up the argument that they can be ” fixed.” Personally, I think that by adulthood we are hard-wired one way or the other and it is impossible to go back. While a gay person may be capable of living a lie in order to conform I think that it is wrong and cruel to expect them to do so. Just imagine if the positions were reversed and you had to live a homosexual life in order to conform even though your sexuality is hard wired heterosexual. It doesn’t bear thinking about, does it?
