Under Palestinian rule, in Bethlehem the town where Jesus was born, the Christian majority population has been reduced to a minority of only 12% in just 20 years.
A woman’s place in Bethlehem? They’re only seen in propaganda graffiti.
Standing across from the Church of the Nativity and in front of a mosque during the call to prayer in the middle of the day, I’m struck by the absence of women.
The contrast is striking: The loud calls to Muslim prayer almost drown out the meek bell from the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Here, in the literal birthplace of Christianity, the continued existence of the famous church is something of a miracle.
