Plunket’s response to a reader’s e-mail about SBW

To: …@plunket.org.nz
Subject: SBW

I am writing because I have deep concerns about Sonny Bill Williams being used on the football field to support Plunket.  He is obviously a loving father to his girls and has a very high profile.

BUT he is a Muslim.  He follows the Koran and surely this offers problems.  Have you asked if he supports FGM, throwing gays off buildings, stoning women, beating women, stating that a woman is worth 1/2 a man, having several wives?  These are all part of the tenets of Islam.  Is he going to inflict FGM on his daughters?  Would Plunket be OK with this?

My children and grandchildren were all Plunket babies and I cannot see how the help I received and the help that my daughters received, fits with Plunket’s support of Islam through SBW.

Please think again.  Yours sincerely [redacted]

How much religious freedom is Plunket prepared to allow? Where will they draw the line? SBW is a dedicated father and role model who is friends with an Imam banned from six UK universities for saying that gay people are worse than animals. Does Plunket want to know if SBW shares his religious beliefs about homosexuals?

He is also friends with Ebrahim Bham who has spread lies about Israel and who promotes the destructive BDS movement and wants Israel destroyed. Is Plunket concerned that SBW might share his views of Jews?

SBW takes photos of himself making the same hand signal that members of ISIS make. Is Plunket at all concerned about how that could be rightly or wrongly interpreted by others?

SBW is not a private Muslim, he is an activist who has brought his religious values onto the sports field. If he is prepared to make a fuss on the sports field he will have no qualms bringing his religious views into Plunket.

What guarantees have Plunket sought that SBW will keep his religious views and values away from their charity? It is very clear that SBW takes his faith very seriously and he has shown already that his beliefs come first, his employment and sponsors second. If I was Plunket I would run a mile from a role model with as much baggage as him. How long will it be before he uses Plunket to make his next conscientious objection? What will he want next? Segregation for Muslim women and their babies? A ban on male Plunket nurses?

Halal formula? No dogs outside Plunket rooms? No bacon sandwiches at Plunket fundraisers?
