An Auckland police dog has been injured chasing down a runaway criminal, requiring surgery.

Axle the eight-year-old German Shepherd is off the streets for about a month after injuring a ligament in a hind leg while “over-extended himself while running”, a police spokeswoman said.

“He underwent surgery yesterday afternoon and is now recovering at the vet,” Auckland City District Police said. “He will be back with his handler and family before the end of the week and no doubt getting lots of cuddles and attention.”

So keen to get the scumbag he pulled a ligament.  Give that dog another soup bone.

I am sure you will all join us in wishing the beautiful Axle from Auckland Dog Section a speedy recovery.

Axle is an extremely effective and efficient police dog, who does a range of different jobs including deploying into a high-end armed offender situations to then being taken to a kindergarten to interact with children as part of our education programme. He has a beautiful personality.

Unfortunately he injured a ligament in his hind leg while working last week. He underwent surgery yesterday afternoon and is now recovering at the vet. He will be back with his handler and family before the end of the week and no doubt getting lots of cuddles and attention.

He will undergo extensive rehabilitation and will hopefully be back on the street protecting the community in no time.

Oh and good luck to his handler in trying to keep Axle quiet for the next four weeks while he recovers!
