Faces of the Day

The photo shows Major General Horatio Gordon Robley with his collection of Maori heads, 1895.

Yesterday a number of Maori and Moriori remains were officially repatriated.  As I watched the people cry and carry on I decided I was going to find a picture of some Maori remains and run a bit of a mocking post about it.  After all, it was ages ago.

And that’s when I found ol’ Horatio with his collection of Maori heads.   That was only a little over 200 years ago.  Those people have family still alive today.

My need to make fun of it dissipated.

As a war faring nation and conquerors go, Britain isn’t at the top of the list of debauchery and nastiness.  But that photo just shows that they returned from New Zealand to display the “almost human” remains of Maori.  Not dissimilar to the way they paraded people from Africa before then.

During Anzac Day I thank people I never met for giving my generation freedom, and I feel emotionally affected.

So yeah.  I get it.   It wasn’t that long ago.  Crying is entirely appropriate.
