National MP tells shop owners they are on their own

NZ First have reacted to Nicky Wagner suggesting shops should not sell things that people want to steal.  Then they will solve their crime problem.

Dairies should stop selling cigarettes if they feel threatened by robbers, says Associate Health Minister Nicky Wagner – this is an appalling, irresponsible view from a government that is totally out of touch.

“Tobacco is a legal product and Nicky Wagner and the government’s response reflects how arrogant they have become,” says New Zealand First Leader and Northland MP Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“Should women stop going out for jobs if they feel threatened by rapists? Should banks stop dispensing money if they feel threatened by robbers?

“The government has turned tobacco into a soaring black market item.

“The government has cut back police on the streets and the number available to arrest criminals. Now they suggest the shopkeepers are to blame.

It’s indeed totally indefensible.

Imagine this scenario:

Home owner:  hello, I’ve been burgled

Police:  what was taken?

HO: a motorbike, chain saw, flat screen TV and a portable spa pool

Police:  well, you’re on your own then

HO:  beg your pardon?

Police:  since we are short of police, we are no longer attending burglaries where you increase the risk by having things that people like to steal – things of value

HO:  who came up with that idea?

Police:  the government
