“You can’t sue everyone in the world”

Yesterday Radio NZ published an article stating that Colin Craig had filed papers in the High court with the intention of suing former press secretary Rachel MacGregor if he loses his case against Cameron Slater. Newshub reported the same story. Surprisingly Stuff then published an article where Craig appeared to deny that he had filed papers against her saying,”You can’t sue everyone in the world.” His denial was limited to the timing of when the papers were filed. He did not say that he had not filed papers.

Former Conservative Party leader Colin Craig denies reports he has launched a new defamation suit against his former press secretary.

RNZ reported Craig had filed papers in the High Court at Auckland against Rachel MacGregor, but he would not go into detail, other than to say it was a defamation suit.

This appears to show that the defamation papers do exist and have been filed. What Mr Craig is denying is that he filed these papers recently. There are time limits for defamation cases so he may have filed a number of them all together before the deadline so that he can act on them in the future if he chooses to.

Proceedings would only go ahead if the justice in his defamation case against Whale Oil blogger Cameron Slater ruled in his favour, RNZ said.

Colin Craig is denying reports he has filed papers against Rachel MacGregor in the High Court at Auckland.

The above statement appears to indicate that he has not filed any papers against Ms MacGregor so which media organisation has the most accurate report? Is Craig denying the existence of new papers or saying that no defamation papers against Ms MacGregor exist?

But Craig denied those reports on Friday morning, saying no new papers had been filed.

“There were papers drawn up involving Ms MacGregor and others but this was a long time ago,” he said.

So the papers do exist? My head hurts.

He said he had since decided to limit any legal action to Slater, Taxpayers Union founder Jordan Williams and former Conservative Party board member John Stringer.

“You can’t sue everyone in the world.”
