“Don’t fund terrorism” sign owner threatened with arrest by British Police

You would think that the British police would be stretched dealing with ordinary crime as well as terrorism but it appears that they have plenty of time to deal with Facebook posts, tweets and now a corner shop keeper’s signs.

The shopkeeper put up the sign in response to the arrest and trial of two corner shop owners who laundered more than £41m. He has already been visited four times in one night by police who have told him that if he doesn’t remove it or change the wording he will be arrested. You may well wonder what law he is breaking by saying something as harmless as “don’t fund terrorism.” Surely the police don’t think that anyone should fund terrorism? After all, it was the police who arrested the corner store owners who were using their shop as a front to launder money so that they could fund terrorism.

It is a clever marketing ploy as well as a patriotic sign to make it clear to customers that there is zero danger of their money funding terrorism if they shop at his store.

Sayed Anwar, 43, and Sayed Alam, 45 ran a money transfer bureau from the basement of a 24-hour off licence – opposite Kilburn police station.

The Afghan pair received £10m a year in transfers which would then be concealed through fake invoices and made up customers before being sent to their homeland.

…The cash laundered abroad cannot be traced, but counter terrorism officers from the Met suspect some of the money was used to fund Islamic extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

…the pair ran their multimillion Sterling Exchange business from the basement of a Foodwise store.

Detectives believe at least £41m was generated through crime.
