Faces of the Day

Who is that unassuming man?

A teenage burglar who allegedly stole nothing but a pair of women’s socks was chased and wrestled to the ground by a fleet-footed father.

The Christchurch man Dan Cooper and his heavily pregnant wife had arrived home on Tuesday morning, with their two preschool children, to find two women sitting in a Honda Jazz in their driveway.

Wife Heather, who was due to give birth the next day, spotted people inside their Deepdale St home.

She got back into the car while Dan opened the door only to see two men bolt out of the lounge. He set up chase down Whitby Rd, eventually tackling one young man to the ground.

“I yelled, I lost it … I was pretty loud.”

Heather called the police who were “absolutely brilliant”, Dan said, arriving within five minutes, arresting the 17-year-old.

A police spokesperson said the other man and two women had not been located.

“They got two socks, that’s all they got..

“I’m calling them the sock bandits.”

Dan.  All he needs is a super hero costume.

Oh, and a better security system.
