New Media wants to have its cake and eat it too

New Media is popular with readers precisely because it is not like the Mainstream (old) media. However, New Media companies walk a fine line every day between staying true to their origins and leaning towards the lure of perceived MSM  legitimacy and status.

We have walked that line ourselves. On the one hand, we often point out MSM failings and poor journalism and then on the other, we also want the status of being viewed as a legitimate media company. Breitbart is currently struggling to maintain their core values as they appear to be succumbing to the lure of becoming a mainstream media company. New Media is edgy and says what MSM are too afraid to say and Breitbart is starting to purge itself of journalists who have views that no longer fit Breitbart’s more mainstream company culture.

A Breitbart News editor said on Monday that she had been fired from the conservative news site for the anti-Muslim tweets she sent after a terrorist attack in London on Saturday.

The editor, Katie McHugh, who has written hundreds of articles for the site since 2015 and previously worked for The Daily Caller, said on Twitter, “Breitbart News fired me for telling the truth about Islam and Muslim immigration.” A Breitbart News spokesman declined to comment on Monday, leaving the precise reason for her leaving the company unknown.

But Ms. McHugh said her dismissal from the news site was related to several Twitter posts on Saturday that drew widespread attention, including a CNN report.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, Ms. McHugh tweeted, “There would be no deadly terror attacks in the U.K. if Muslims didn’t live there.”

I realise that many people would find this statement of fact offensive but it does not say that all Muslims are Islamic terrorists. It simply points out that all Islamic terrorists are Muslims and therefore if the UK had no Muslims living in it there would be no Islamic terror attacks. It is no different logic and offence wise to saying that there would have been no IRA terror attacks back in the day if there were no Catholics living in Ireland.

Though sporadic killings still occur, fortunately the IRA’s death campaign ended through democratic negotiations with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement’s power-sharing between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. By contrast, terrorism by ISIS and similar Muslim factions is an ongoing, large, well-organized and seemingly ineradicable movement, … the IRA campaign occurred in several northern Irish counties with occasional attacks elsewhere, Muslim-inspired terror is raging worldwide, and the scope of the bloodshed is far greater.

She further inflamed critics with her back-and-forth with the actor Pej Vahdat. After he replied to her by saying, “You’re a real moron,” she responded, “You’re an Indian.” (Mr. Vahdat said he was Iranian-American.)

I actually think what she said is really funny. He insulted her and she simply stated that he was the race that she wrongly assumed him to be. It would be like me saying to someone that they were an idiot and them responding, well you’re a woman. Alternatively, I could call someone a drongo and they could respond well you are a Kiwi! I am interested to know what part of her response was considered offensive. The fact that she said his race as a comeback or the fact that she got his race wrong?

On a crowdfunding page that said it would be used to pay for Ms. McHugh’s medical bills and living costs during unemployment, she was unapologetic.

“I said nothing wrong,” she said. “As President Donald Trump says, if we don’t get smart, it will only get worse.”

Dismissing a writer for professing anti-Muslim beliefs might appear out of character for Breitbart News, which has often defended writers besieged by criticism from the left on free-speech grounds, considering them to be victims of political correctness.

But it was the second time this year that a Breitbart employee had left the site after controversial comments. In February, Milo Yiannopoulos, one of Breitbart’s biggest stars who took glee in provoking liberals, resigned from the site over his glib remarks about pedophilia

The news organization, whose traffic spiked in the run-up to the presidential election, has looked to compete directly with more mainstream publications. It hired John Carney, an experienced reporter from The Wall Street Journal, in January to lead its finance and economics section, and it has talked of international expansion.

The news site was denied congressional press credentials in April but is accredited by the White House….Though Breitbart has been seen as a leader of the far right, some prominent conservative commentators condemned the decision on Monday.
“Breitbart fired a journalist to appease fake news media,” Mike Cernovich tweeted.

“Whatever the reason for firing, Katie McHugh is a great reporter,” Ann Coulter tweeted
