It is time to allow Dairy owners to defend themselves

Enough is enough. I have been reading far too many news stories about Dairy owners being assaulted and injured. It is wrong to not allow people whose lives and physical safety is regularly at risk to not be able to defend themselves. In New Zealand, we are not even allowed to defend ourselves with Pepper spray despite the fact that in many Western countries people are allowed to carry it in self-defence. At the very least Dairy owners should be allowed to carry pepper spray. If offenders know that their targets are no longer easy targets they will be less likely to attack.

Pepper spray is not enough, however. A paintball gun or something similar that will cause bruises but not serious injury or death should also be considered. In fact, one should be designed especially for shop owners called the GTF out of my Dairy 2000 model.

A dairy owner confronted a robber on the street, but was assaulted and had to be sent to hospital because of his injuries.

The female offender took money from the West End Store in Palmerston North on Wednesday evening and there was an altercation with the male owner as she fled.

His injuries required treatment in Palmerston North Hospital, police said.

…A woman, who’d arrived on a bike, had just burst into the dairy demanding money and threatening the female store owner.

The male store owner intercepted the thief on the street outside and confronted her.

After assaulting him, she fled on her bike down College St towards the centre of the city, police said.

…The thief was described as a large woman, aged between 25 and 30, and she was wearing a dark sweatshirt and light-coloured pants at the time of the robbery.
