Truth in advertising: compare and contrast

The misleading billboard

In New Zealand, this billboard was allowed by the Advertising Standards Authority despite the fact that it is misleading and deceptive. In America another billboard containing nothing but historical facts was put up and the outrage was epic. The spokesperson for the people responsible for the billboard has said that he will happily remove the billboard if any of the statements on it can be proved to be false.

Muslim groups in Indiana are reportedly angry over a billboard which they believe mocks the Prophet Muhammad.

…He said he sold the ad to a “group of patriotic Americans” who were denied advertising by national companies.

“Their desire, born out of love and not hate, is to launch a national conversation,” Woodsmall said in a statement.

…“After talking to a half-dozen Islamic scholars and receiving and reviewing numerous citations from Islamic law and literature, I was convinced that each point listed on the billboard was historically and factually true,” Woodsmall continued.

…According to WRTV Indianapolis, the Muslim Alliance of Indiana has described it as “an attack on all Muslims.”

“It is a horrible billboard,” said Rima Shahid, executive director of the Muslim Alliance of Indiana. “I’m outraged by it, but saddened at the same time.”

I guess the truth hurts.

“At any point this would have been highly offensive, but we’re in the holiest month of our faith, when we slow down and reconnect with our communities,” he reportedly continued, claiming that the billboard “perpetuates hate.”

Indiana Rep. Andre Carson (D) believes the billboard’s author took Islamic text out of context “just like Al-Qaeda, ISIS and the Klan do to religious texts to justify their bigotry.”

I wonder what possible context rape, slavery, sex with a child and torture and slaughter of captured men could ever be acceptable? The real issue here that they do not want to address is that modern Muslims still consider actions from a barbaric and brutal age to be acceptable now. If they applied today’s values and laws Muhammad not only would not be considered a perfect man he would currently be on death row. In contrast, Jesus who lived in such a barbaric and brutal time that he was crucified to death would probably have his own talk show where his speciality would be healing all his guests. Unlike Muhammad, Jesus did not attract his followers with violence and fear but with love and forgiveness.

As a side note, during the American election campaign, the following billboard was allowed in Phoenix because they called it Art. The owner said that it will stay up for as long as Trump is in office.
