Not even Maori T.V is immune to the vocal minority

Maori T.V despite checking with the New Zealand Tongan community before airing the comedy Jonah from Tonga has now pulled the series. This is yet another win for Social Justice Bullies everywhere proving that it only takes one person to make a fuss to make an organisation back down. In this case, all it took was a single Politician, social media and an online petition for the MSM to amplify the outrage and make a tiny minority view seem like a big deal.

The board of Maori Television has withdrawn the series Jonah from Tonga from screening on the channel.

New Zealand’s Minister for Pacific Peoples, Alfred Ngaro, has said the series perpetuates negative stereotypes of Pacific people.

Jonah from Tonga is an Australian television series written by and starring comedian Chris Lilley. It follows a rebellious Australian boy of Tongan descent who had been introduced in Lilley’s 2007 series Summer Heights High.

Georgina te Heuheu, the chair of Maori Television, said once the full board of became aware of the screening of the programme on Thursday evening, a decision was made then to pull the series.

She says the values of Maori Television include respecting all communities.

Really? To respect all communities that would mean a ban on all comedies and all comedians. If you can’t make fun of our different cultures you can’t have comedy. What about their Find me a Maori Bride show? Isn’t that disrespectful to Maori? I had a look and it certainly is making fun of them with all kinds of silliness. What the back down is really all about is stopping the negative Media coverage caused by Ngaro. What it isn’t, is a genuine last minute realisation that whoops we didn’t realise that it is racist to have a comedy poking fun at Tongans.

Remember this classic from Billy T starring none other than Bob Jones?
