Media should be upfront about their bias: No media outlet is truly impartial

I promoted as a free speech alternative to twitter when it first came out. Both Cameron and I have an account there and I know that a number of our readers also joined up as part of a group that we called the #KiwiPosse.

Recently a reporter from The Guardian newspaper approached Gab for an interview. What was said is illuminating as it revealed that Gab was unlikely to be written about in an unbiased or even accurate way even though The Guardian (like all MSM outlets) will swear on their mother’s grave that they are a balanced and impartial reporter of the news.

We at Whaleoil are upfront about our biases as we have never claimed to be balanced. We do our very best to be factually accurate. We believe it is better to be upfront about your biases so readers are aware that they are viewing stories/facts through a certain lense.

Because The National Party threw Whaleoil under the bus after we were hacked and certain individuals took steps to hurt us financially we are openly hostile towards certain individuals. Knowing that background readers can then decide how much weight to put on our criticism of those individuals. If they know that Cam was personally treated badly by Bill English for example then they can either decide to dismiss his attacks on English’s character because of his bias or accept them as coming from someone who knows his character flaws from first-hand experience.

No media is truly impartial or balanced. What is important is that Media are upfront about their bias. In the case of The Guardian not only are they biased from the start towards they appear determined to ignore the facts and tar them with the same brush as some of their users.
