Dirty Politics or a hard hitting and effective way to win a race?

I do enjoy a good attack ad as relentless positivity gets on my nerves after a while. My Mum had a friend once who was so positive and sweet and nice that she made my teeth ache. Relentless positivity from politicians doesn’t work for me as in politics you have to get through to the voter

A) Why your policies are good

B) Why the opposition’s policies are bad

National’s “Let’s Tax This” ad is hard hitting and gets a political message out effectively. If that is what Dirty Politics is then that explains why Whaleoil was accused of it. National’s  ad is essentially a list of simple facts with a dash of humour thrown in. I really can’t see what is dirty or negative about it. Is it dirty to point out that the emperor has no clothes on?

In contrast to the above ad giving the voter six reasons why not to vote for Labour the below ad from National gives us only one reason why we should vote for National. It is similar to their 2014 ad but has less detail and therefore less impact.

In contrast, Labour’s ads are full of emotion and drama. We are told that the government will attack their optimism and that it is time for a change… just because. Clean rivers and other positive things that they say it is time for are mentioned but because the ad is relentlessly positive we do not get the impression that the current government has done anything wrong.

I can compare it to a little sister saying to her Mum, it’s my turn to sit in the front seat, Susan has had her turn. No compelling reason is given apart from a sense of fairness. Everyone should get a turn.

National’s “attack” ad, on the other hand, is more like the little sister making a strong argument for why she should be in the front seat rather than her sister by pointing out all the things that Susan does wrong when she is up front.
