Nats start cleaning house ahead of negotiations, Eagleson gone, former Bennett staffer also gone

The National party has started cleaning house ahead of negotiations with NZ First.

The first two to go are Wayne Eagleson and Clark Hennessey.

National leader Bill English’s chief of staff Wayne Eagleson has resigned.

Eagleson has been a pivotal figure for the past nine years in the National government, and Stuff has been told he will stay on for the next few weeks while negotiations carry on to form a government.

Eagleson was particularly close to former leader John Key and stayed on after English asked him to do so following the change of leadership.

But he had been widely expected to go after the election.

That’s the story, but Eagleson was one of those in command of the details of Winston’s superannuation information.

Clark Hennessey, a former staffer of Paula Bennett, and one who was involved in the leaking of private information around the head of Te Puea Marae, has also resigned. How curious.

It is no surprise also that Paula Bennett was removed from the coalition negotiation team today.

National is cleaning house ahead of negotiations in the hope they can front foot some rather tough discussions coming up.
