Breitbart in the basement and Whaleoil in the lounge

When I imagined what Breitbart’s Media’s work space looked like I imagined something like this. A smaller version of the large news rooms of mainstream media.

The popularity of the site and the volume of articles that they put out creates the illusion of vast resources as they even have their own shop. I was wrong. They actually all work around a large table in the basement of their editor’s luxury townhouse. That is the thing about working online, you do not need huge infrastructure just high-speed internet, laptops and talent.

Judging by the photos Breitbart appears to have seven fulltime staff members. Breitbart also has wealthy financial backers so as an organisation it is not reliant on advertising revenue to pay their wages.

Whaleoil currently has two full-time staff members but thanks to our wonderful and loyal team of volunteers we are able to punch well above our weight. We are privileged to be able to publish superb original political cartoons as well as guest posts and more recently intern posts. We have a moderation team who make Whaleoil a safe and respectful place to be and proof readers as well as a help desk. It is thanks to our volunteers that we are able to offer our readers posts like Daily Proverb, Word of the day, Photo of the day, Map of the day, Whaleoil sport quiz, News quiz and more.

Our volunteers work from home. Believe it or not, one member of our team lives in Canada! It gives them a unique advantage as due to the time difference they are able to proof read posts while we are still asleep here in New Zealand. Both our Editor Cam and Deputy Editor Pete have a home office but I do most of my work from the comfort of my favourite leather wingback chair in our lounge.

There are two ways for Whaleoil to get to the point where we can afford to hire seven full-time staff members like Breitbart. We either get a knock on the door from a wealthy backer who believes in what we do and wants to help us expand or we continue gradually building the business one subscription at a time. We are currently the only blog in New Zealand with fulltime staff and that in itself is a huge accomplishment.

If you want to help us to expand you can do one of two things.

  1. Become our wealthy financial backer
  2. Commit to paying us 32c a day  for a subscription and get faster loading times and ad-free as part of the package

If you agree with me that’s nice, but what I really want to achieve is to make you question the status quo, look between the lines and do your own research. Do not be a passive observer in this game we call life.
