The Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln versus NZ political party policies

Abraham Lincoln said that “You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich” but both TOP and the Green Party are targeting the wealthy and expecting them to pay more tax than everyone else.

TOP Party policy: Tax income from all productive assets and redistribute to below-average income earners

Green Party policy: Increase tax to 40% for income over $150,000

Abraham Lincon said that  “You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift” but instead of giving young people incentives to save for their future the TOP party wants to hand them $200 a week, no strings attached.

TOP policy: Pay $200 per week to everyone aged 18 to 23

NZ First, on the other hand, want to encourage saving.

NZ First party policy: Provide a tax advantage for savings

Abraham Lincoln said that “you cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence” but both the Labour party and the Green Party want to hand young people higher education on a platter which means that they will value it less because they will have no skin in the game.

Labour Party policy: Provide everyone with three years of free post-school education

Green Party policy: Reduce tertiary fees until tertiary education is free

Abraham Lincoln said that “You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they could, and should, do for themselves.” The Maori party instead of letting the market decide which businesses succeed and which fail, want the government to artificially make Maori businesses successful by buying their goods and services.

Maori Party: Require government departments to buy more from Māori businesses

Abraham Lincoln said that “You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.” These days we are not as focused on class differences but we are focused on divisive identity politics that do not help further the “brotherhood of man.” Identity politics emphasise our differences by dividing us into various groups by sexual preference, gender and race. Instead of focusing on what we have in common they emphasise our differences.

Labour Party policy: Ensure access to justice for trans people

Maori Party policy: Provide racial bias training for everyone working in the criminal justice system

Labour Party policy: Use refugee policy to address the humanitarian needs of the Rainbow community globally

Green Party policy: Allow local councils to establish Māori wards without holding a public poll

TOP policy: Oppose attempts to remove Māori electorates

Green Party policy: Entrench Māori electorates and oppose any referendum on them

Maori party policy: Entrench Māori electoral seats

The only party wanting to look at race-based politics is the NZ First party.

NZ First party policy: Hold a referendum on Māori seats

NZ First party policy: Remove the requirement to consult iwi from the Resource Management Act
