AUSA block shows bias and a determination to disaffiliate the Pro-Life club

AUSA – Auckland University Students’ Association The University of Auckland

The AUSA has blocked a question to disaffiliate the Young Nats club while declining to block a question to disaffiliate the Pro-Life club in what appears to be the fourth attempt by the AUSA to disaffiliate them. The ink has barely dried on the third unsuccessful and legally unsound attempt to get rid of the Pro-Life club and already the AUSA are back to their old tricks.

The unequal treatment of the two groups is more evidence of the AUSA’s inability to treat all Auckland University clubs fairly and to respect a diversity of opinion.

AUSA accepted two questions regarding the Pro-Life club for their 24th-27th October Referenda.

AUSA rejected and blocked a submission to disaffiliate the Young Nats on campus.

AUSA Protects Young Nats, But Not ProLife Group

[…] In the latest round of Referenda questions for students to consider, the AUSA has accepted yet another attempt to disaffiliate ProLife Auckland, but in an extreme act of hypocrisy, they have rejected a question asking ‘Should AUSA disaffiliate the Young Nats?’

[…] “It appears that the AUSA believe that a vote on the disaffiliation of the Young Nats would be discriminatory. Yet they are not willing to apply that same yardstick to the attempts to punish the ProLife group. Their own process is being abused by radical groups who refuse to accept that others may have a different opinion.

This is an embarrassment for an academic institution that prides itself on diversity and debate,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ. “It is incredible that this selective attack on freedom of association is happening in a university where freedom of speech and debate should be treasured and protected at all costs. It’s also hilarious that the student’s union is more interested in protecting National party supporters than a group who support women and unborn children.”

Family First is calling on the AUSA to reject the repeated and frivolous attempts to disaffiliate ProLife Auckland and to upgrade their rules to prevent this continued abuse of the democratic process. “[…]

Hi again fellow students. We’d like to stay affiliated with you!  :)

There’s about fifteen of us, mostly undergraduates, with a range of worldviews and genders. All of us believe that all people, including the unborn, have a right to life.

Our club facilitates discussions, we set up stalls outside the General Library, and run movie nights (With free pizza and an open invite!) We fundraise for single parents. We volunteer and run working bees at pregnancy help centres.

We don’t hate, shame, misinform or use graphic images. We would not do that. The only claim of misinformation was against the 2012 club, and they were cleared of that by an AUSA SGM vote.

We’re glad AUSA affiliation doesn’t take sides on important topics, like politics and life issues. We’d love for it to stay that way. Dunedin ProChoice said at the last referendum, “I believe that by disaffiliating, we pro-choicers are only showing that we fear we cannot stand up to pro-life ideas… I don’t see a fault with there being a respectful and rule-abiding pro-life group on campus… I hope AUSA follows suit [from Otago] and keeps ProLife Auckland affiliated.”

Affiliation should be open to all legitimate clubs. We meet the guidelines set out in the AUSA Constitution. We follow the rules. There can be no legitimate reason to disaffiliate ProLife Auckland.

So we hope you’ll vote ‘no’ to referendum questions 7 and 8 this time. Whether you agree with the principles that we advocate for or not, there’s no reason to disaffiliate us. […]

How truly sad that AUSA is threatened by and will not tolerate people who respect human life and stand up peacefully for the rights of the unborn. They will tolerate political groups and religious and cultural clubs but they have no tolerance for people who offer support to women who find themselves unexpectedly pregnant. They are a disgrace and their lack of respect for a diversity of opinion shows them up as the intolerant and biased organisation that they are.
