Face of the Day

Ding Dong.

Journalist and broadcaster Rachel Smalley has announced she is to leave Newstalk ZB at the end of 2017.

Smalley, who has successfully hosted Early Edition for the past four years, has made the call to bow out on a ratings high.

“Newstalk ZB was where my journalism career began more than 20 years ago and it’s been a privilege to work with so many extraordinary people. I’ve loved my time in radio but I’m now looking for a new challenge and I’d like to explore opportunities in the corporate world.”

Rachel Smalley has had a stellar run at Newstalk ZB.

They can’t talk highly enough of her.  It’s what you do when you want to make sure someone else employs her to take her out of your hair

This is the woman that was scornful of overweight women, calling them heifers and lardos.

This is the woman that that doesn’t know the difference between Johannes Kepler and a bullet proof vest as she went for the high score criticising NASA for naming a space probe after an instrument associated with violence.

She was of course quite happy to wear protection while shilling the downtrodden in Palestine, considering Israel an aggressor who should not retaliate when its citizens are attacked.

She was an embarrassment to her show’s original sponsor who asked ZB if there was another way they could be promoted as long as it wasn’t associated with Rachel.

She considers herself to be one of the few “serious journalists” this country has produced, because she went to the Middle East on a company paid trip to do some anti-Israel/pro-Palestinian porn.

Nothing like standing there next to dishevelled children and looking down the camera saying it has to stop when at the same time the fathers are hurling rockets at civilian targets in Israel.

I could avoid her on her early show.  Whenever she covered for Larry Williams, I couldn’t make myself listen.  The clear lack of understanding and lack of breadth of knowledge was so obvious as to be irritated and embarrassed for her at the same time.

NZME Head of Talk Jason Winstanley said Smalley would be missed.

“We will be very sad to see Rachel go, but I understand and respect her desire to seek out new challenges and opportunities. We wish her the very best and Rachel knows NZME’s door always remains open to her.”

If she will be missed, it will be by people that aren’t in my demographic.  Or perhaps she will be missed like a toothache.

The corporate world will probably love her.  She should get together with Vic Crone.  I think as a team they would be unbeatable.
