Family First continues drive to clean up sex and porn

Family First NZ is calling for the rights of families in Christchurch to take precedence over the prostitution industry, and is accusing politicians – both local and central government – of turning a blind eye to the harmful effects of prostitution to families.

“Families shouldn’t be the victims of weak lawmaking,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.

“The negative effects of street prostitution include increased littering of condoms, syringes and wet wipes, noise and nuisance, offensive behaviour, traffic issues at night, a reduced sense of public safety, and a decline in property values.”

None of those are specifically a family-related issue.

“It is a national disgrace that we are exposing our children and families to that level of risk,” says Mr McCoskrie.

What are children and families doing outside at that time of night sharing the same streets as sex workers?   I hardly ever see them, because I hardly ever find myself in those areas at the times they are working.

“And the politicians have failed to deliver – both when the law was introduced in 2004 and when a bill to deal with this exact issue was rejected by all the parties except NZ First in 2015.”

When introducing the provisions in 2004 to give control of the placement of brothels to local councils, the then-Minister of Justice, the Hon Phil Goff said: “.. Most of us would not want to see brothels established in residential areas or adjacent to preschools or schools.”

“Unfortunately, this has been a spectacular failure – and families are suffering because of it. Residential brothels. Street prostitution outside family homes and shopping centres.”

Legal to meet people in a public place Bob.   How’s that different to a couple meeting at the mall for a coffee before going to have a quicky somewhere?   Is the fact that money changes hands the sole difference?

“The political parties who rejected the recent attempts to ban street prostitution need to explain to these Christchurch families why their safety and wellbeing aren’t that important,” says Mr McCoskrie.

Bob McCoskrie’s been quite busy pushing prostitution and pornography issues for the last few years.  To begin with as an extension of his involvement with the Conservative Party, which at one stage resulted in the party looking like a sex-obsessed organisation due to the lack of other topics being published.

Prostitution is of course a legal way to make money.  Clients and service providers have to live somewhere, meet somewhere and exchange services somewhere.  But McCoskrie is making it sound like they are having it off in the middle of the road, and there is some implied issue with the public’s safety that I really can’t see.

Family First used to focus on the important parts of traditional families.  Adults and children in a stable and healthy living environment.  Prostitution and porn are in fact not specifically a Family First issue.   Healthy, safe, well balanced and successful families will watch porn, and some family members are prostitutes or use prostitutes.

McCoskrie reminds me of the priest in the Dave Allen joke that went to the nude beach every day to keep an eye on the depravity of people not being dressed.  Conservative politicians would normally be advised to stay away from “bible bashing” on porn and pornography issues.  The number of times they have been caught out in the past is making McCoskrie’s obsession with the issue a potential slow motion train wreck.
