A reader responds to the ‘Do it now or regret it later’ post

I totally agree with your guest post on the need for bone density scans. They are quick, easy and put your mind at rest regarding your vital bone health which is vital if you want to avoid the brittle bones and hunched backs associated with osteoporosis.

My last scan was prior to having a hip replacement two years ago and very reassuring to know that my bone density was still very high.  Most of the credit is due to the hormone replacement therapy  ( HRT ) that my doctor recommended when I entered menopause.  I came off it twenty years later very reluctantly, as I had felt so good.

Oestrogen is the most important female hormone and, without it, comes a greater risk of osteoporosis and heart disease.  Oestrogen works to build collagen, a building protein, so a lack of oestrogen can affect our skin, causing dryness, itchiness, more wrinkles and loss of elasticity. It can also affect the quality of our hair and nails.

A lot of women were scared off HRT a number of years ago because of warnings about possible cancer. Time has shown that those warnings were grossly overplayed and my doctor told me recently that women are coming back to hormone replacement.

HRT is very well researched and safe for the majority of women. Many women feel that HRT has ‘given them their lives back’, they find that their sleep improves and that ‘ they are a nicer person to live with’.  Taking the right type and strength of HRT can improve energy, motivation, mood and libido.

My impression, after speaking with a number of women on this issue, is that many GPs, males particularly, have limited knowledge and interest in this topic so it really pays to self-educate.

My own experience has been very favourable. As breadwinner for my family, working hard in a managerial role, then, several years down the track marrying again, I would say honestly that I couldn’t have functioned without it.  Life is good !!
