Goodbye Pete

Pete has worked his last day at Whaleoil. It marks the end of five years of what has been a rollercoaster ride for all of us. A lot of what happened was not what Pete had signed up for. Who could have predicted a criminal hack, a book and the intense whirlwind of media interest that would follow it for example?

Pete has forever changed Whaleoil for the better with his moderation plan. He assured Cam that the initial pushback would be worth the stress and he was 100% right. His expertise in moderating online forums transformed Whaleoil into a place where everyone felt safe to comment and where comments were as much of an attraction for intelligent content as the posts themselves.

He introduced many new ideas and had an uncanny sense of what readers would enjoy. I mean seriously, who would have guessed (apart from Pete) that pimple videos would be such a hit? The guy had a sixth sense for those things.

When Cam was so very ill for a month last Christmas, flat on his back on morphine for the pain with half his face paralysed the blog would have had to shut down if it wasn’t for Pete. Pete delayed his holiday in order to do the lions share of the blog as I cared for Cam. I could not have kept the blog going without him during that really scary time.

On a number of occasions, Pete stepped up and took up the slack. When Cam was in court for a week and a half he enabled Whaleoil to keep going when the going was really tough and when Cam needed the occasional weekend off to go hunting having Pete on staff made it possible.

Goodbye Pete, it has been a wild ride. Enjoy your weekends off. Lord knows working 7 days a week isn’t for everyone. You have left the blog in good shape and our volunteers well trained. You will be missed.
